Second Take But Different: 1963 Studebaker Champ Pickup

Thanks to CJS1872 for this cool Studebaker truck find that’s a little different from the one we featured less than a week ago. It’s been mildly customized with an earlier Studebaker car dashboard and a universal wiring harness, but has also had some recent work done. It’s for sale here on craigslist for $2,000 and is located in San Diego, California.

Yes, there’s some rust on that tailgate. But guess what? There’s a new old stock one included in the sale! That was a nice surprise while reading the ad. Despite not being pictured, the front and rear bumpers are included as well. As several commenters pointed out, the fleetside bed for these trucks was sourced from Dodge, and doesn’t match the cab perfectly. Still, considering the lack of tooling dollars available, Studebaker didn’t do badly!

According to the seller, the dashboard is from a 1956 Studebaker President. I think it looks pretty nice and period, if not correct. Since I’m not planning on winning any concours events, I’d keep the dash as long as the fit is as good as it looks in this picture. A four speed (not the usual three) is on the floor and would make things even more interesting.

If this is indeed the original V8, it’s either a 259 or a 289 — can one of our expert readers tell which one? The seller says that lots of work has been done to this truck including new brakes, refurbishing the fuel tank, cleaning the radiator, new hoses and battery and a rebuilt carburetor. There’s also a set of new tires. I’m curious — would you rather have this somewhat modified but running find, or the undisturbed but long time stored truck from earlier this week? Me, I’d take this one and enjoy the quirky features like the dashboard. Let us know what you’d choose to do below!

Wishes he still lived in San Diego… Only so he could go get this truck, otherwise a horrible place to live, except for the weather.

Absolutely agree about San Diego. I was stuck there for about two years. Bleah. Just my opinion. Others may vary.

This is not a 63 engine.

I think that is worth 2 Grand.

I learned to drive a three on the tree in my dad’s ’64 Champ with a 289. I really liked that truck. White exterior, it was outfitted with a small camper style cover. He never had the tail gate. It didn’t come with one as he bought a repo with just a few thousand miles on it. The repo guy didn’t get the tailgate. If he knew that a Dodge tailgate may have fit, we might have had the only Dodgibaker truck known to exist.
