The seller doesn’t give any description at all for this beautiful, gorgeous, looking-like-new, museum-quality (Enough, SG!) 1984 Chevrolet El Camino SS. That’s always disappointing when nothing at all is said other than vehicle specs, such as the mileage being 8,288. Maybe that’s enough! They have it listed here on eBay in Pompano Beach, Florida, and the current bid is $7,600, but the reserve isn’t met.
We’ve all seen mileage claims over the years here by overzealous sellers or those pretending not to know the true mileage. This is one case where I think we can believe these folks; this car looks like it’s brand new. This is a fifth-generation El Camino, and they were made from 1978 through 1987. The early cars were made on GM’s A-body (until 1981), and the later cars were based on the G-body.
The detail where the quarter panels meet the tailgate almost makes me weep like a child, it’s so beautiful and well done. We don’t get to see inside the bed, under the tonneau cover, but I’m guessing it also looks like new. You probably noticed the California license plates. Since the seller gives no information at all, we don’t know the history of this car, but it appears to have led a pampered life. Hagerty is at $12,100 for a #3 good-condition car and $19,100 for a #2 excellent car.
The interior looks outstanding with classic gray velour seats and power windows and power locks. The small pre-airbag steering wheels are pretty elegant. This one, even though it’s a Super Sport, has a column-selector for the automatic transmission – that’s not very sporty. There were graphics available for the exterior that the original buyer must not have been interested in, it gives this SS version more of a stealth look.
The engine is Chevy’s 305-cu.in. OHV V8, which would have had 145 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by the automatic sending power to the rear wheels, this has to be the nicest later El Camino that I’ve seen. Are there any fans of this era El Camino out there?

Absolutely beautiful EL Camino.
Scotty I don’t know if these El’s had a console option, but I’d take the column shift anyways. Look at that great front end. Is that a factory dual exhaust ? Gorgeous rims. Perfect.
My 78 El Camino Black Knight had all the bells and whistles. Buckets, console, A/C, AM-FM cassette, power everything and the one year only available 350 4bbl. Great vehicle and would love to have it back.
Wow!!! You’d have to look long and hard to find a nicer original ElCamino. To answer Stan, I beleive these rims are original to the car, one of my favorites in fact. These were so popular years ago and now they’re very few and far between. Looking at all the panel gaps I’m leaning towards this one being original and very well taken care of. Absolutely beautiful find and great write up too Scotty thank you.
👍 👍
You think maybe Scotty likes this rig?
I luv it .
Its like owning a Time Machine.
GM … we’ve all been saying for years … bring the Elcamino back and keep it this size !!!

They are factory wheels, I bought a new 79 SS my senior year of high school
Swapped the wheels out Cragars
Appears to be a dent on the driver’s side near the back (behind the filler door/El Camino emblem). Gap between rear bumper and tailgate isn’t consistent, and there’s some funkiness on the right side if you zoom in. Would the filler behind the front bumper appear that deteriorated if the vehicle had basically sat for 41 years?
Not sure what’s up with the chin spoiler looking like it does.
In Florida with California plates? Did they drive it or transport it?
I’m sure there is a (believable?) story on why the rig is in FL with current CA plates.
It looks a little sketchy to be an 8288 mile car.
Look at the eBay ad, it was purchased by a dealer and shipped to FL. I’ve seen quite a few cars these guys sell on eBay, and they have 100% positive feedback. It’s a legit truck.
Ok, Don, if that’s your real name….
Look at some other sites and you’ll find numerous negative reviews, anyone interested in buying from a dealer out of state needs to make or pay for an in-person inspection. Operations like this buy a lot of their cars from auctions and know nothing about the history of the cars and “inspections” are cursory.
I am a BIG fan of all El Caminos !! I have owned a ’68 Viper red Elko with a 350 c.i./ 3speed automatic…I drive it, not a trailer queen, it earns its keep as a hauler occasionally. It’s a conversation starter, amazing how many people have El Caminos in their past. I annoy the local Chevy salesmen, asking when the new Elko is coming out ! I like this one, but would REALLY like to get a 1959 or 1960, the ones based on the full-sized Chevies.
305 liter? One large mof**kng engine
18,605 cu in. Gas mileage. Oh the horror.
That’s why I like it so much! Ha, thanks for catching that typo, Steve, and thanks for doing the math, Tom! Ha, that’s great stuff.
one of few GMs I like (3rd/last gen chevelle) for looks – big chunky grill, straight lines (& this model w/curved back window/head board). * Wagon, camie, sedan, vert, coup,* all nice. Father had 1 as company car. Bigger bent8 meant almost every stop sign spun tires on take off. Hada B careful/conscious.
I think this was also the era merican co.s went too corporate for me. B4 this (may B this is the last of ‘em?) U had purchase options: 3, 4 transmis choices, 6 motor choices, all the models listed above (* to * but some even notch or FB added as well). THEN additionally, within models, were grades w/trim, performance, style, paint, options. Then key? (in my mind anyway) Wages matched item Costs. Co.s developed all those choices to tickle out customer’s $, where as now… no thing is affordable. (now extras: computers’n radio choices only? IDK as cant afford these new things). ???, no? yes?
What?
It’s listed on the dealers website for $25,000, expect the reserve to be very close to that number.
Steve R
I am in the process of renovating and 85 el Camino ss mine came with bucket seats console power windows and locks and cruise. One correction that is a common mistake the el caminos did not go to the g body they stayed on the old Malibu wagon chassis unlike the monte carlo which went to the g body the el Camino windshield area is narrower
Clean Elko but I would want to see under side pictures. Dual exhuast is probably dual outlets from one muffler maybe.
Auction update: this one ended at $17,600, and didn’t meet the reserve, so no sale.
Love El Caminoes!
