8K mile: 1982 Delorean DMC-12

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This DMC Delorean is located in Erie, Pennsylvania and is receiving lots of attention here on eBay. The car has 5 days remaining in the auction and has been bid to $35,468 and has almost 50 bids. The Delorean was a rear engine, two seat sports car that was marketed from 1981 to 1983. It was the brainchild of John Delorean who started Delorean Motor Company (DMC) around 1976. This particular car has only 8,206 miles and is said to be in impeccable condition.

The Delorean was offered with either a black or silver interior. This car features the silver option, which is generally in good shape. I think it would be more desirable if it was equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission but you can see that it is an automatic. Regardless, the interior looks to be mint and ready to drive and that is what many buyers are looking for. Experts estimates that about 9,000 units were built before Delorean filed for bankruptcy in December 1982. The Dad of one of my friends had a Delorean when I was in high school. His experience with reliability was not very good. His first Delorean was returned as a lemon and replaced with a new one. It was rarely driven.

Many buyers found the DeLorean’s acceleration and power underwhelming, especially when paired with the automatic transmission like this car has. The Delorean featured a 2.85-liter V6 engine with 130 horsepower and 153 lb-ft of torque sourced from Peugeot-Renault-Volvo. The seller states the Delorean starts, drives and stops smoothly. The frame is said to be solid and rust free. Recent maintenance includes a new fuel pump, sending unit, Thermo-time switch (TTS), battery and tires. A tune up was also performed.

The pictures in the ad show that there are two dings in the stainless steel body. The original tires come with the sale and the car is listed as a local pick up only in person. The seller will not ship the vehicle. Though originally called the DMC-12 for its $12,000 target price, the car ultimately retailed for $25,000. Is this one for you? Would you modify this car or keep it stock?

It’s nice and low mileage survivor.
The only thing missing is the extra pedal but as these get harder to find plus younger can’t drive stick it the automatic might gain traction .
Lets see if Back to Future continues to holds cult movie 🎥 coolness tied to popularity and drives car values .

All of these cars are “low miles”, that’s because the drive for the speedo is in the front left wheel and they always broke being made of a cheap plastic gear sprocket. When i had one I had to replace it twice in a 4yr span. Most owners don’t bother because the car is too slow to get in any trouble anyways. I’m not saying that is the case here as I don’t know this car, but I know it’s true on a lot of them.

If that were the case, that would not be a true measurement of mileage sometimes the wheel would turn faster, and sometimes it will go slower, depending on which way you turned.

Even so, having only 8200 miles in over 40 years is also a concern for a car of dubious quality.

But, the bidding public doesn’t seem to mind, at 42K and Reserve Not Met.

Beautiful survivor. Sorry, someone has to say it, this DeLorean is in such great shape because it was only driven “from time to time”.

Just out of curiosity, how do you fix those dings? You can’t just Bondo and paint, I can’t see them pounded out smoothly.

Sorry for the “pun” these were just a mark in time…..
Having worked clutch, brake replacement and a couple of minor items. There are not any worse to work on (other than body repairs) than many other cars. Yes, these were no ball of fire and did not turn in outstanding “G” numbers. But in stock form they are a nice sporty ride. ( with the manual gear box, as I have never seen or driven an automatic) Please note I said in stock form. The modification to the look-a-like “Back to the Future” car ruins them. Between the additional electronics and weight, they are no longer a joy to drive. I know, I have spent alot of time on one that is sitting in Harrah’s Museum in Reno.
I still appreciate what DeLorean was “trying” to do, but was never able to get it off the ground properly. I still wear a golf shirt and hat from DeLorean as a buddy from High School worked for the company.
Just a shame how the whole thing went down.

I had a chance to drive one of these in the late 80’s.
    As I remember….”What a Pooch!”

My wife drives her dad’s Delorean, bought new in ’81. We live in Europe and the car always generate an incredible attraction, smiles, thumbs up, requests for pictures, etc. There is a very knowledgeable club in France (“Stainless Wings”) which has developed a thorough online info and repair forum. We regularly drive hundreds of miles to our club outings. Indeed, many of the vehicles have quality and reliability issues but that is totally accepted and is part of that very special ownership: we all pour on the problem vehicle during our “tech-sessions” and, with some wine helping- fix the stuff! Special car, great friendship!
