Plymouth in Plymouth: 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II

053116 Barn Finds - 966 Plymouth Belvedere II - 1

This car, a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II, is located in Plymouth, Indiana. I always wonder what the ratio of vehicles in namesake cities is, like Cadillacs in Cadillac, Pontiacs in Pontiacs, Plymouths in Plymouth, etc. This Plymouth is listed on eBay with a bid price of $2,700 and six days left on the auction.

This car is in great, original condition with only two owners over the last fifty years. The current owner’s “father-in-law lived across the street from the original owner and helped her maintain this car, then she gave it to him when she could no longer drive. I bought it at his estate sale when he passed away. It has been stored in an insulated building for the last 25+ years.”

There is basically no rust on the body of this car, it’s amazing. Or, very little rust; there is a bit on the lip of the rear wheel well, but I have more than that after being on the earth as long as this car has. The bumpers have a little peeling and subsequently a little rust, but the body looks great.

As good as the body looks, the interior might look even better. The carpet could use a thorough cleaning and, as they say, it’s only original once so I personally wouldn’t put in new carpet, but that’s just me. The seats are amazing as is the dash, the headliner, the door panels, and everything else inside this car.

I present the venerable and beloved 225 “slant-six” engine with 145 horsepower, and it looks like it’s in great condition, too. The engine could use some detailing, although, there are two schools of thought on if detailing, and painting, an engine constitutes taking the originality away from it. I think that there’s no question that it does because you would be sanding away the original paint and adding new paint; hence it wouldn’t be “original” anymore. I would probably just clean this one up as good as possible and leave it. The seller says that the brakes need work, most likely from sitting for so long, so plan to trailer this one home. I think this is a great looking car, even without a V8, manual transmission, and with “two too many doors” for some people. What do you think about this original Plymouth in Plymouth?

I have to say, I’ve never once thought about how many Plymouths are in Plymouth! Now you have me wondering. Another car that’s great for just going to the store, nothing fancy, but it doesn’t have to be to pick up some groceries or a case of beer.

This car is a perfect example of why I like this site so much. I love seeing these old, unmodified, unmolested, cheapo cars that are still in pretty good condition. They remind me of when I was a kid and even though they’re not going to win any awards at car shows, I find that they have a certain charm to them. I would fix any rust spots and just make sure that the car was mechanically sound so I could bop around town in it. Other than that, I wouldn’t change a thing.

So funny! many many years ago ..like 1972…my roommate in a small town in Colorado had a 4 door stripper like this. I think he paid fifty bucks for it. I thought it was so square. I was driving a 5 window Chevy truck…, Maybe 2750 bucks is 50 bucks in 1072 dollars.nah

It wasn’t long ago at all (maybe 20 years ago) that these were still going in the $300 range because no one wanted a four door. Including me.

This is a nice solid example of a Plymouth Belvedere. The carpet needs a good cleaning, but the upholstery and headliner look great. The paint is not worn out. A brake job and some new tires and this baby is ready to roll.

I was never a Mopar fan, so to speak, until I came up with this 66 Belvedere I wagon. I scored it for a mere $300.00 back in 1995 with 22k on it. That’s a story in it’s self.

This rig looks right at home on the farm. Pop drove Mopars until he checked out. Always four doors. He was a manager for the Wisconsin State Journal. At times he would deliver bundles of newspapers to local towns for the kids to deliver. Bundles so high in the back seat I could not see out the back glass, trunk so full the lid hardly closed. Man, he used to thrash those Belvederes and Fury’s. I remember he bought a new Belvedere four door. Yellow with a black vinyl roof. That car I would put in the rare car category. Maybe one of one. LOL!

I’d drive that car all day, with a smile the whole time. Nothing special, but I love the little details.

Nice clean car for redo. However Plymouth slant six engines have a hollow crankshaft and are known to spin the bearing and throw a rod. Put in v8 and you
    have a runner.

I own and have owned many slant sixes and drive them like my 440’s – never had a crank issue…..nice old car.

ahhh this brings back memories of my 67 Belvedere II, just like this but with a 318 and dual exhaust. Drove that car, in December, cross country and back. Good times.
