9K Mile Coupe: 1999 Dodge Viper GTS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

While we often talk about cars like the 993-chassis Porsche 911 seemingly never entering a stage of depreciation, the first-generation Dodge Viper definitely dropped like a stone for a spell. The GTS coupe, however, was slightly more immune to these fluctuations, and examples like this 20-year owned black-with-gray-stripes here on eBay will have little to no problem commanding a fair price. Bidding currently sits at just under $34,000 with the reserve unmet.

The RT/10 Viper that was a loosely warmed-over concept car took the sports car market by storm, but it also flamed out a bit in terms of desirability among collectors. That’s been changing as of late, with clean early models getting a nice bump price-wise. The GTS, however, seemed to provide the perfect compromise of brash muscle car exuberance and hardtop coupe comfort. Creature comforts were still very limited, but something about losing that flimsy removable roof panel made the GTS feel like an upgrade in more ways than one.

This Viper sports numerous upgrades courtesy of its longtime owner, and the modifications are seemingly all quite tasteful and smart (starting with those gorgeous BBS wheels that measure 18×13 at the rear.) The interior is surprisingly handsome, as the cockpit of almost any Viper typically feels like an afterthought. Though the seller doesn’t mention it, this coupe appears to have the optional Connolly leather interior in a striking shade of caramel. Most modifications are focused on the chassis and engine, but there is an SVS shifter inside.

The seller notes the following upgrades: Corsa cat-back exhaust; Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers; high-strength performance push rods; SCT Calibrator 2 custom PCM flash; MSD 8.5 mm plug wires; Eibach lowering springs; K&N airbox; and more. The combination of black paint with the silver stripes gives this Viper a slightly more subdued appearance and despite red and blue being the “typical” GTS colors, I dig the color scheme shown here. Mileage is low at just 9,590, so someone is leaving with a nicely preserved and upgraded Viper GTS in near-new condition.

I was thinking of leasing one of these until l seen one up close, the brake pedal and clutch pedal are so small and the room inside wasn’t for me being six three and two sixty. So I leased a Cadillac xlr instead, three years later gave it back with sixteen hundred miles on the clock.had a lot of fun with it most people didn’t know what it was.

9k miles and you are opening the engine up for rocker arms and pushrods? Why? it’s already 500hp plus. Jacking with the PCM. I would run from this one.

My best friend was known for his articulate ability to tune these monsters. Not only could he tune them he was a remarkable driver he also knew how to drive them. He became a sought-after tech in a multi state area. He once told me
I can put these babies into situations that would
Blow my mind. We were both Mopar drag racers and campaigned W2 340 A bodies with great secuess. My best friend died of a brain tumor in 2010. In closing, the vipers abilities were vastly underated and they were far more pedigree then most would admit.

I was looking at a 98 GTS and after doing a little research I found a few issues, at the time tires for the stock wheels were nonexistent, same for windshields, the engine accessory bracket was prone to breaking but there was an aftermarket replacement and the door hinges were designed for the RT10 doors without the weight of the glass and regulator and wore out quickly. All that didn’t deter me, we just couldn’t come to terms. This is my favorite color combo for these.

Two good things going for it,low miles and a low total production number. There were just 31,956 made in total.price on these is pretty much mileage based since low miles and great condition go hand in hand with these.
