BF Auction: No Reserve 2006 Cadillac DTS

Sold for $3,400View Result

There comes a time when sinking back into the lap of luxury aboard a prestige brand can prove irresistible. The feeling is heightened when the car in question offers a combination of effortless power and good fuel economy. That is the winning package available to the new owner of this 2006 Cadillac DTS. It is an unmolested one-owner survivor that needs little to present at a higher level. It is surplus to the owner’s needs, so she has decided it needs a new home. Therefore, she has listed it exclusively with us at Barn Finds Auctions without a reserve!

Cadillac offered DTS buyers in 2006 a staggering twenty-six paint shades, but few are more classy than the Platinum Silver gracing this car’s flanks. It retains a healthy shine, and any imperfections are too small to show in the supplied photos. The panels are laser straight, with gaps that are as tight and consistent as you would rightly expect on any prestige brand. There is no previous accident damage or repairs, and this Caddy is rust-free. The DTS rode the crest of a change in vehicle styling, which is reflected by the fact that chrome began reappearing on cars after decades of being largely on the outer. It blends successfully with the Silver paint, adding an edge that would be less subtle on a vehicle wearing a darker paint shade. The chrome and plastic is in good order, as is the glass. One of the beautiful seven-spoke 17″ wheels is damaged, but I found several spotless secondhand replacements online for under $200 without really trying. That appears to be the only cosmetic shortcoming, and addressing it will be inexpensive. Otherwise, this Caddy is in excellent order.

The “Northstar” high-performance V8 engine range first appeared in 1993, remaining a company staple until 2011. This Cadillac’s engine bay houses the 4.6-liter version of the technically advanced powerplant, giving the driver access to 275hp and 295 ft/lbs of torque. The power feeds to the front wheels via a four-speed 4T80-E automatic transmission. Power steering is an integral part of the package, as are four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Luxury cars tend to be relatively heavy, with this car’s curb weight quoted as 4,118 lbs. However, it remains a spirited performer, capable of cruising comfortably all day at 70mph while returning fuel consumption figures better than 20mpg. This Caddy has 134,000 miles on the clock, which is slightly below average for a vehicle of this type and age. It is in excellent mechanical health, and potential buyers should consider it a turnkey proposition.

Life aboard a Cadillac should never involve hardships, and this car delivers on safety and luxury. The new owner receives a range of airbags, traction control, leather upholstery, climate-control air conditioning, power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, power mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control, a Cartier clock, a leather-wrapped tilt wheel, and an AM/FM radio/CD player. The driver’s seat shows slight wear on the outer edge, but careful work with a colored leather conditioner should make that a memory. If the winning bidder finds that prospect overwhelming, handing it to a specialist wouldn’t cost the earth. The remaining leather exhibits the typical wrinkles that add a touch of class and elegance. The timber and plastic are excellent, as is the carpet. With everything detailed, this interior should sparkle like a new penny.

Owning a prestige motor vehicle can seem daunting to some people, but they shouldn’t feel that way about this 2006 Cadillac DTS. Its needs are minor, and I’ve revealed that the parts required to lift its presentation won’t break the bank. It shares its mechanical components with more humble models from within the General Motors portfolio, meaning that parts are readily available and affordable. It doesn’t drink its fuel at an alarming rate, so it could function as an effective and practical daily driver. All those reasons combine to make this Caddy worth a closer look.

This seems like something I’d expect to find at a “Buy here, pay here” lot rather than Barn Finds. These were solid, comfortable, reasonably quick cars, but this one seems a little out of place here.

Solid, remarkably nimble and comfortable at speed which it could reach quickly. My last one in 2010 (a lease) needed an HID bulb and ballast replaced. It was the just the bulb but the Service Manager said, “Why not, while we’re in there?” He also said that DTS stood for ‘the Design Team of Satan’ because a lot of the front end had to be semi-disassembled to get at the headlamp assembly. I’m sure that some speedier workarounds have come-up over the last decade or so.

I got pangs of remembrance seeing this familiar shape. Of the two I drove, one was Black Raven and the other Blue Chip. Both were impeccable machines. They’d clean-up so nicely and I strove to keep them looking showroom new. Dragonflies used to mistake the shiny hood, trunk lid and roof for standing pools of water. They’d drag their tails across the surfaces depositing their eggs. I tried to tell them they were making a pretty big mistake.

The cylinder head bolt hole threads on the Northstar were revised late in the 2002 model year. Engines built after that don’t have anywhere near the issues with pulling/stripping those threads that the older ones do.

Yes, I think they went with the LS6 head bolts around that time. Still, as with any Deathstar V-8, I’d get a compression test and a full engine inspection by a knowledgeable mechanic and make sure everything checks out. You do Not want to be saddled with a several thousand dollar repair bill that costs you more than you just paid for your new car!

Yeah, my dad had a 2005. Sold it in 2021 for $2k with only 64,xxx miles as it was burning abundant coolant. Sad, as it was otherwise a magnificent vehicle.

My buddy drove one of these deep into the USA from 🍁 as part of a job, gorgeous traveling machine he said.

Didn’t “Paulie Walnuts” on the Sopranos drive one of these?

If it was on the opposite end of the continent I would be extremely interested. I just don’t see much like this out here. If I wanted a Lexus or Infinity lots to choose from.

I’m curious that the description says this Cadillac is a one owner car but the photo of the title show that the current owner acquired it when it was 10 years old and had over 90,000 miles on it.

Very complex car. Maybe mine was a lemon but I had endless electrical problems and there was the worry about that northstar pulling a head bolt.

In the last photo there is a horizontal series of approx. five spot welds where a panel is attached to the tower for the left front suspension. The metal in this area appears to be rather crudely beaten back into shape as it “works” and is not as visible as an outer body panel. Also note the spot weld for the hood prop rod.

Somebody please tell me how a NJ car could be rust free after 25 years.

Can I get any data on the maintenance that’s been done – tires, Battery, brakes. I had a 2001 for 10 years and my wife still misses it.

Nice car but I’m here to tell you that engine is on its last leg, I’ve had 5 of these Northstar engines from 99 through 2006. Not one of them made it past 140k miles without blowing the head gaskets. Big job to fix that plus they all burn oil. Once they hit 200k miles oil burn is a quart every 800 miles . If you like working on cars, go for it!
