If you’ve been on the hunt for a great British Sports Car, the Triumph TR4 is a great option. They are comfortable, offer solid performance, and are easy to work on. This example is being offered by a British enthusiast who lives here in Boise, Idaho. They are getting older and have made the decision to liquidate their collection, so this wonderful driver needs a new home. Since it is local to use, we were able to see the car in person and even took it for a spirited drive! It’s a great driver that only needs minor things to be in top condition. While the TR4 was a major redesign, the chassis and drivetrain were essentially pulled right from the TR3. The Michelotti-designed body provides a more conventional and usable car, while the underpinnings provide all of the positive characteristics of the TR3. Somehow, Triumph managed to keep curb weight close to the TR3A. Engine displacement and power out were increased, eliminating any penalty incurred by the slight increase in weight. As a matter of fact, the TR4 was very successful in racing, winning its class at Sebring in 1961 and taking the National Championship title for SCCA E-Production. So clearly, these cars have serious performance potential.
Under the lovely hood is a 2138 cc inline-4 which was rated at 105 horsepower when new. While the seller doesn’t know much about the car’s history prior to their ownership, clearly it’s in good mechanical condition. We were impressed with the power delivery in our test drive. The engine sounds great and provides plenty of grunt to keep up with modern traffic. The transmission shifts as it should and we didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the drivetrain.
The interior appears to have been redone at some point in the car’s past. It’s held up well though and is comfortable. The dash is missing the stereo but is otherwise complete and in good order. With some additional detailing, a new ashtray lid, and a radio (or radio blank-out plate) this interior would show very nicely.
Giving the car a full walk-around, you will find a few small dents and some paint chips. The panel and door gaps look nice, although the doors could use some adjustment. A look underneath reveals a solid frame, although there are a few dents. Overall, it presents nicely throughout and is a ready-to-enjoy classic.
The TR4 is a fantastic classic to own, with great parts support, solid performance, and lovely styling. This example runs and drives great, although it could use a tune-up to be ready for frequent use. Given its simplicity and durable mechanicals, the TR4 is a great option whether it’s your first classic British car or your 100th! First off I just want to say that I appreciate it when someone has an ample amount of pictures when selling their classic car. Very nicely done. This is one beautiful Triumph. This is one of my favorites as well. It looks like it was very lovingly taken care of for a long time. Hope it goes to a good home.
I agree with all the comments so far and I really like the cherry bomb silencer that rounds it out nicely.
I’d also like to add thats the perfect shade of red for this Triumph too.

The early TR 4 is a fun, enjoyable car and investment. Kept in this condition the new owner will never lose a dime. I had a white over black ‘64 way back and was foolish enough to sell it to buy a ‘67 Camaro, 350, 4sp convert thinking I was going to be getting a 4 passenger, v8 “TR 4. Both were great cars that I wish I had back. Someone is going to get a great car in this TR.
So, question. The dash is painted white. The car is painted red. So, repaint in red?
Early tr4s all had a white dash no matter the exterior color.
