A Good Deal? 1994 Chevrolet Lumina Z34

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

As if Chevy’s Celebrity wasn’t cool enough (Hello? Is this thing on?), the company threw the Lumina at us. I remember a friend had a late-90s Lumina and it was quite a site with the clean body panel lines. This 1994 Chevrolet Lumina Z34 is posted here on craigslist in one of the happiest-sounding places in the US: Sunnyvale, California. The seller’s asking $4,000, here is the original listing, and thanks to Rocco B. for sending in the tip!

The Chevy Lumina four-door sedan was different, but in a good way. The later models had such clean lines, it looked like you could change a quarter panel over your lunch break and still have time for a McChicken. They never offered a Lumina station wagon as with the previous Celebrity wagon, but there was a two-door body style in the first generation. Oddly enough, the second-generation Lumina spun off into a version of the Monte Carlo, even though Chevy didn’t offer a two-door Lumina in the second-generation. Are you confused yet?

Those exhaust tips look wonky but in other photos, they look normal. It must be a trick of the camera. The Lumina Z34 was a performance version that offered buyers a decent amount of performance for the era, but there were some quality issues, according to many sources. The Z34 was only available in the two-door body style and they all came with the sports suspension package known as FE3. The biggest V6 engine was also a Z34 thing and all thrown into this car made it a fun ride, at least as far as the early 1990s.

The seller goes between a horizontal (i.e., normal) format and a vertical (i.e., abnormal) format for the photos, my apologies for having to make them fit the Barn Finds format here with these composites. The seat covers look incredibly loose, maybe due to the seat padding losing its zing over the decades. Any good upholstery shop should be able to make these seats look like new again. The back seat looks good, but overall, this is a very unexciting interior with no color anywhere other than red on the seatbelt button by the console. Speaking of the console, the automatic console shifter doesn’t help the excitement factor. A dashpad often means a bad dash, but the seller doesn’t give any information about the interior at all so we don’t know if it’s a cracked dash or if it’s protecting a perfect dash.

The engine, and kudos to the seller for including an engine photo, is Chevrolet’s 3.4-liter dual-overhead cam V6, which puts out 200 horsepower and 215 lb-ft of torque with the four-speed automatic transmission. The seller mentions a new tune-up, new plugs, wires, and a valve cover gasket and says it’s a good running and driving car. You can’t get much for $4,000 anymore, would any of you pay $4k for this Lumina Z34?

I would pay $4k for this right now if it weren’t 3000 miles away, I know I know, easy for me to say. I had a very uninspiring 90 Lumina base coupe 3.1V6 with the column shift. This car was like the holy grail of used mid size Chevy’s back in the 90’s. It’s worth $4K just to clean it up a little, maybe take care of that driver seat, and bang around town in it for a year or two before moving it on to the next person.

Nice car. Had the 3.4 DOHC in a Grand Prix GTP. The first thing a new owner needs to do is change the timing belt.

I see these at car shows every now and then. They always have people around them reminiscing about their younger years in the ’90’s.

This Stis up the coast. At $4k I was liking it a lot until I got to the instrument cluster photo. Can’t imagine looking at these tractor gauges during my drives. However, a 5 speed manual would make me look past this shortcoming.

Quality issues according to sources… I bought a brand new 91 and can write a novel on the quality issues.

There was also a Lumina Euro 3.4 sedan with the same 3.4 V6 as the Z34. I still see first generation Luminas on the roads all the time here between the Mississippi and the Missouri.

After almost two weeks this one is still for sale, so $4,000 must not have been as good of a deal as I thought it was.
