After spending time neatly cramped in an old barn, this 1946 Chevrolet Suburban has finally made it out into the light once more. Partially disassembled and fairly solid, this Chevy has some potential. Although there are a few missing items that will need to be sourced for this one. Bidding has reached $4,050 with 1 day remaining. Find it here on ebay out of Ottawa, Kansas.
A wide open view of the engine reveals a rusty old lump that was rebuilt but is now locked solid. Surface rust is present on the firewall section, but the rust appears superficial, as there is no visible rot. Also there isn’t much in the way of wiring, or the brake system present.
A bit vacant, the interior isn’t too bad off, as there is no rot to report. The front portion of the floor is missing as well as the seats. Although missing some, the dash is in nice enough shape, as is the steering wheel, although borrowed from a ’49 Chevy truck. With plenty of space in the back, this would be an awesome bicycle hauler, shop truck, or even a simplistic vintage camper.
Overall the body looks fairly straight, with only a few areas of concern. A square was cut into the rear apron for the addition of a trailer hitch. Unfortunately the rear apron got a little wavy in the process. You are probably wondering where is the front end? Well thankfully the front end of this truck is present, and appears not too bad off. The front fenders look as if they have been “hammered out” and then sprayed with some high build primer, and maybe even some body filler. A skilled and patient metal craftsmen could likely make these fenders nice enough for a restoration. Also the engine covers, front grills, and radiator panel are present, making for a mostly complete front end. Looking over the rest of the body there is some rot near the rear door hinges, and there is also a rot area in the driver rear body panel near the rear doors. There is also some missing glass, a couple of window regulators, and some other odds and ends that are missing from this project. Someone will definitely have their work cut out for them with this Chevrolet suburban but this truck seems like a worthy project. Would you save this ’46 Suburban?
Well, anyone who knows me won’t be surprised when I say it should be restored, right down to the splash dippers. That old 216 will take this truck all over the place. It would fair out just fine on the lesser travelled roads and probably cruise all day at 55. I might add that after recently spending a week in Wisconsin, it would be just as at home there. I might add that I love seeing all the back roads paved. For the most adventuresome, drop in a 261 and convert it to 12V, but I’ll take the Stovie and 6V. I might add a little accessory: a 6V fan, with those cute rubber blades….
Well at least you know what you’re getting :)
Looks like an interesting barn find from the pics. The suburban is a nice find but what else is in this barn?!
that was my first thought also!!
COOL BARN FIND!! I’d change the roof. Lower the suspension. Stuff bigger wheels underneath it. Custom paint and interior. Power it with something big with a blower on top, and side pipes rather than running boards. So much can be done to this. Hopefully it will end up at SEMA completely decked out.
Just tack this up on your garage wall for inspiration….
That is nice!!
Thanks for the pic! Is it yours?
Very Cool! Nice Burg! Great color combo……
These are rare I believe! Looks very solid. My vote is restore it,dont mod it.
