Air-Cooled Collection: VW Beetles and Buses

The seller of this intriguing collection of air-cooled Volkswagen projects doesn’t explain whether he just happened upon them or if they’re his personal vehicles that are up for grabs. There’s seemingly every shape and size of old-school VeeDub up for grabs, from a nicely patina’d early model Beetle to a seemingly very clean Squreback. The seller claims the asking prices are all the same – $7,500 each – and that the cars all ran when parked a little over a year ago. Find the listing here on craigslist in Northern California.

The Squareback may be the best of the bunch, as it looks like it was someone’s pride and joy at one time. The paint job is clearly intentional and the eyelids on the headlights are a popular enthusiast tweak. The old-school California blue plates suggest years spent in the dry West coast climate, and while the seller doesn’t address any rust issues, none of these cars seem particularly crusty in photos. I’d love to see the Squareback lowered on some Porsche 356 steel wheels. One car that’s missing in action is the red Beetle, shown in the group photo above.

The lifted Beetle is probably one of the more intriguing finds here, especially since it looks surprisingly complete. Whenever these conversions happen, the end result can be very hit or miss, with poorly matched bodies and 4WD chassis. In this case, the fenders are super clean and look like they’ve been modified slightly for the larger wheels and tires. I could be mistaken, but they are either cut or flared out in some way. Regardless, no details are offered on the chassis it rides on, but it looks like a lot of fun.

I struggled whether to include this Beetle or a green bay window Bus, but the Beetle is far cooler. This look is increasingly “manufactured” these days, with the paint intentionally faded, old-school decals added to the doors, and the must-have air-cooled roof rack. Of course, seeing the mismatched white-wall tires may indicate this rat-rodded Beetle was created in-period, but who knows – no matter the story, this is the type of Beetle you can get in and use immediately (once running, of course) and start seeing thumbs up daily. Which air-cooled project would you take home?

What’s up with early 60’s bug missing front signals on the mudguards? At first thought it could be replacements from a late 50’s but even those would have holes adjacent to headlights. I like this one the best as it looks complete and mostly straight. I’d pay 4-5k assuming its running and paint it myself.
