Alaskan Garage Find: 1986 Toyota Supra

Technically it could be argued that this 1986 Toyota Supra is a 1986.5 model since it’s an A70 third-generation car which came out in mid-1986. However a person defines it, this is probably the nicest one that I have seen. This time machine can be found on Craigslist, or here on the CL archive, with a $6,000 asking price and it’s located in the Anchorage, Alaska area so be prepared for some shipping charges. Or better yet, fly in and drive it home, you always wanted to do the Alaska Highway. Our own David F. tracked down this sweet Supra – thanks, David!

The seller says that “This may be quite the barn find. I bought it this last summer where it appears to have been parked under the factory car cover in an Anchorage garage for near ten years.” They have included a little video showing a walk-around and general sights and sounds of this beauty. I noticed that the tires have some cracking so maybe don’t head down the Alaska Highway before having those replaced first. They do mention the tires in the listing: “Although the tires look good, they are over ten years old along with the struts. They should all be replaced this summer. Easy stuff. But that’s it. It drives great. Fresh tires and struts and it will drive like new!”

I can’t imagine a nicer example of this car, this one looks almost perfect after three solid decades of being used and/or stored. Or maybe it was stored more than it was used with only 82,000 miles on it. The A70 Supra was the first model that wasn’t officially known as the Celica Supra and it was quite a departure from the previous generation but not as collectible or valuable as the next generation A80 fixed-headlight twin-turbo Supras. Still, for a solid, relatively fast, most likely very reliable car, this looks like a nice example.

As usual, the carpets need the infamous “deep-cleaning” but otherwise this is one tidy-looking car. The seller says that “This car is missing nothing. You do not need to go look for some odd part. It is complete and it all works. The interior is beautiful. The driver’s seat has that 4way adjustable option (that works!) to squeeze you in if you’re drifting too hard!” Hagerty is at $7,400 for a #3 good example so this could end up being a good buy.

Oddly enough, even though there are 24 photos there isn’t one photo showing the engine – or the top of the engine. It is shown in the video that the seller provided, though. This 3.0L inline-six would have had 200 hp. It sure looks clean from underneath but it seems unusual that there isn’t one photo showing the engine from the top side. The “engine seals had dried out and it leaked a bit. So this past winter, I removed the engine and spent many hours cleaning and resealing the whole engine with new Toyota parts, new timing belt, water pump, gaskets, etc. Even a new clutch, while I was at it. It has no leaks. It runs perfectly.” This really looks like a nice one, have any of you owned one of these third-generation Supras? Or better yet, have you ever driven the Alaska Highway?

Just got rid of my 87 Turbo Targa and it was one of my cars that was on my bucket list that I always wanted. Let’s just say I was not impressed by the car in the least bit and that is weird because I’m a huge Japanese car fan. I think the Targa option really weak in the body stiffness and it made the ride extremely sketchy. Also, I noticed that even some of the most basic maintenance replacement parts were not available anymore from Toyota or the aftermarket so finding replacement parts for some things were very difficult, like the steering stabilizer that they only used for 2 years until discontinuing it, still never found one when I sold it! I’ll stay with my RX7!

I have an 89 Supra with 34k miles on it. It is not turbo because when I bought it I did not have the cleanest driving record…Hardly ever drive it now. Hope it is worth more than $6000

Awesome looking Supra. I’ve always loved the first three generations of the Toyota Supra.

I would think his location will severely limit the interest.

You would have to really love this car, and not find another one, to go that far to get it.

I wonder if the car has A/C.

The first time I saw an ’80s Cadillac that had no air was an Alaskan car. It did have a heavy duty heater though.

This is a pig with lipstick. This car has been on/off Craigslist in Anchorage for the past 2 years.
Apparently, he has changed his ad or a flipped bought it, but the engine is toast.
No one is driving that down the AlCan.

This would not be the vehicle for the Alcan. And yes I’ve driven it. Wild trip.
