American Turbo Power! 1987 Buick Grand National

Coming to us from North Ridgeville, Ohio, is a lovely 1987  Buick Grand National up for auction on eBay. At the time of writing, the high bid for this Grand National sits at $20,800, and the reserve looks to have been met. The odometer clicks in at 96000 miles, but as you can see from the repair sheet, the engine has been rebuilt, and many extra mods have been added to this Buick.

Indeed, one of the greatest performance cars that America has ever produced, the Grand National has been the object of desire for anyone who appreciates a factory sleeper.  But this is not your grandmother’s grocery-getter! Depending on which performance test was run or which magazine you believe, the Grand National GNX was considered the fastest production car in the world in 1987. Although this car is not a GNX model, it is not far off with the previous owner’s modifications. Check out the repair sheet to see what has been done to this car.

Looking through this listing, there appear to be a few issues that may lead to some people passing on this car. The motor and transmission being rebuilt could be an issue for some, as well as the “noise in the bottom end” you can hear when the car warms up.  Are these deal breakers for you?  Or would you take a chance on this, knowing the rarity of these cars? The rest of the car looks solid. The black paint looks smooth and glossy, and the interior is immaculate, with no rips or tears visible in the seats or cracks in the dash.  And there is plenty of rubber to be burned off on the tires!

So, who is ready to buckle up and place your bid on this Buick Grand National? This is your chance to own a piece of American automotive history that has been well taken care of and is ready to hit the open road or dragstrip.  Imagine the sounds of the turbo as you mash the throttle and have all your cares blown away by the wind rushing through the open T-tops. Or line up next to your neighbor kid’s annoying loud truck and blow it away (at a sanctioned dragstrip, of course)! These are great cars and an important piece of American automotive history.  Check this one out here on eBay.

A t-top model too! That noise in the bottom end would scare me though since I’m no mechanic. I suppose it could be something minor, but over $20k I wouldn’t want to risk it without having it checked out by a mechanic. That’s really something I’d have done if I was selling it in order to get top dollar, which makes me think the owner knows it could be bad/expensive.

If you go on Youtube and look up musclecar nationals 1987.Just about every car running in the current class was a Grand National or a T type.New at the time, pulling off 13-13.50s in the quarter mile. The following year those vehicles had to race in the pure stock big block class because of 13 sec ETs

The Turbo V6 when new had bottom end noises. It was the rods banging against each other on the crankshaft. We replaced the motors at that time and that solved the problem. Certainly not all had the noise, my T-Type was one that did. It started knocking at about 20K so I replaced the motor thanks to Buick Motor Div. My GN never did.
Some of the rods apparently were not wide enough on the crank end. Never saw one fail because of it.

I had a couple of T Types back in the day, nothing could keep up with them.

I owned an 87 GN, no engine issues when I sold it in 1995 with 50K miles, again, it only had 245 HP, my new 1995 Cadillac Eldorado ETC had 300 HP would blow it away, I now own a Challenger Scat with 485 HP and that’s way enough HP for any street driving.

I’m skeptical and I live practically next door to N Ridgeville. First of all, that list of parts and repairs suggest the car was driven hard. And why a cold air intake kit, it’s got an intercooler? Or maybe I’m missing something.

Because the factory air cleaner on these were pretty restrictive.
