Corvette may claim the title as America’s Sports Car, but there was a time when there was another. It may not have been as slick looking, but the AMX was a two seat coupe that offered great performance at a surprising price. This one needs some work, but could be a good alternative to the more common classics. Find it here on eBay where the auction ends later today.
The base engine was a 360 V8, but you could also get a big 390. Luckily, this bad boy has the later. It doesn’t run, but the seller mentions that it turns over freely. The Edelbrock carburetor makes me wonder what else has been done to the engine and if it wasn’t running recently.
Unfortunately, the interior is a mess. The dash pad and door panels have been removed. Those seats are out of something else and need to go! There is one ray of hope though. That shift stick poking up out of the transmission tunnel make me happy. A 4-speed sitting behind that 390 just means more fun!
Wearing Big Bad Orange paint and black stripes, this AMX looks like a great project. It needs a lot of work though and seller claims that it’s “pretty solid”. With the auction ending sooner today and no bids above the $6,900 starting bid, I’m afraid this one may sit a little longer…
“Title in original owners name” That sounds like a deal killer.
What does that mean beyond the fact that the current owner never registered it?
Looks like one I used to have. By AMX standards, that is the plainest of plain janes (except the engine). Vacuum wipers, no ram air, and I bet it has 4 wheel drums. But, the right seats are included. Oh, and watch out for that trunk…there is serious Fiberglas work around the quarters. But I still want the dang thing. :(
You can see by the master cylinder it does have 4-wheel drums.
The AMX has the 4 piston front disc brakes and drum rears.
This one definitely has a drum-brake master cylinder and no power booster. In those days just about everything was an option. (You’re talking about a car that didn’t even come with electric wipers!) With the exception of the 1965 Marlin I don’t think any AMC car was equipped with standard front discs until the late 1970s.
Well at least the shell is in decent shape…but that interior though. Price is cheap but the restoration won’t be
Guy’s trying to do a title skip…not sure that’s legal, but maybe it is where he’s from.
I like these cars but would rather have a driver one that runs and stops with no rust. Even if it’s more money.
The Corvette may lay claim to being America’s only sports car, but we shouldn’t forget the Crosley Hotshot.
I simply can’t consider a car with 35-44 cubic inch engines producing 14 to 26.5 hp a sports car…
$6,900 is about right IF you are into these things and willing to do it for gratis. I don’t think you can get the parts for $30,000, and certainly to paint it with the results people expect now is over $30,000. To bad the car won’t even bring that completely done.
It’s going to need to be a labor of love. Love can be a wonderful thing. Makes you overlook most of the obvious?
$30,000 for the parts is way way out of line as I can get them for under 5k. You don’t know what Big Bad AMX’s with a 390 and a stick are bringing do you?
I agree with you on the parts pricing. But this car with these options is never going to be the ultimate AMX people are willing to shell out for.
Doesn’t currently run…that’s *Flipper 101* …”If you don’t try to start it, you cannot be held responsible if the engine is blown “…more and more of them pull this trick now, so it’s not just them being lazy b***ards not willing to get an engine running, it’s to cover themselves against a buying saying they did not disclose engine damage…buyer be AWARE !!!
Seller says “pretty solid car throughout” and “car was purchased from Florida”! I’ve seen 30+ year old cars from Florida and I think you’d be smart to check this one out in person – “ salt air”, you know.
A title skip across state lines it one step too far. What is a buyer going to do if things go south at the DMV? If you believe that the car ran when the seller bought it, but doesn’t now, that suggests he’s had it in his possession for a period of time. Why didn’t he ever put it in his name? He’s either lying, cheap or lazy, possibly a combination of those three. Also why no pictures of the undercarriage, a floor jack and 5 minutes would have accomplished that.
FYI, Edelbrock has been selling that carb for close to 30 years, it’s presence doesn’t guarantee any work has been done recently.
Steve R
I know a good deal of cynicism is warranted with online sales, but to be fair, the seller has 205 positive feedbacks and only 1 negative in the last year – and even in that one he offered a full refund and the buyer didn’t take it, so how bad could it have been?
His rating of 99.5% is nothing to sneeze at and just by that rating alone, I’d trust his word. Pretty sure he didn’t con 205 people just so he could screw the buyer on this one deal.
If you have questions, you can ask directly on ebay and sniff out a flipper yourself.
You make a good point and I am not suggesting that he is trying to rip anybody off, but his specialty is apparently selling collectibles and most seem to sell for under $60 or $70 bucks. I see one vehicle sale in the last year, a Silverado pickup. I mention this only because he may have limited experience in assessing a 30 year old vehicle and the particular areas of concern in an AMX. He says to text him with questions – an interested party would probably need to have at least a phone conversation to get a better feel for the situation.
By the way, ‘base’ is the only way these came in 1970 and Hagerty (bless their overinflated hearts) values the 360 at 24,800 but the 390 at 39,900 so the seller is offering a pretty decent deal.
I just texted the guy and he says he has the tail lights, door cards and they need to be replaced, no dash pad.
Those are VERY hard and expensive items to find and replace. Ask the MIsfit garage guys.
Title shouldn’t be a problem but the engine is the mystery here.
Dash pad repos can be found here for $250. I used one on my 1970 javelin, and the fit and finish was first rate. Much better than the originals, which peeled Day 1.

And what kind of options do you think will make this car “bring the money” Dan?
Nice prices.
But I’m with AMCSteve here, Dan. What do you mean it doesn’t have the options to bring the money? When I’m looking at a classic with a 390/325 hp that has a four speed and it’s got as sexy a body as the AMX and isn’t falling apart with rust it’s already near the top of my must have list.
Are you saying it’s gotta have AC or something to bring top dollar? (or are you just hoping no one else bids when you jump in at the last minute on this one? lol)
You guys are kidding, right? Disc brakes, AC, tilt, go pack, leather, electric wipers, 15 inch rims, am 8 track or am/fm for starters. Sorry to contradict you on a couple of points Steve, but these items do make a difference.
Go Pak would probably bring more
2 hours to go and no bids but almost 300 people watching. Might be one of those last minute bidding wars.
I love all the armchair experts and their comments dissecting the poor seller on a public forum. Makes for a great sale.
I do not know the seller but do know plenty of people who have taken the plunge at buying an old muscle car. Doesn’t matter if it was found through a friend/family member/neighbor or just spotting it in a garage. He found it and I am sure he paid well to get it. From the condition of the AMX it had been kept by someone previous who most assuredly with age (or their family) decided to part with it. I have seen worse.
So the guy buys it. Pretty sure the luster of owning the “new” old muscle car has wore off pretty quick when the new owner is unable to pick up a 1-800 build a car catalog that can be had for any number of the “other” cars that damn near everyone else has. It presents a challenge that few want to take. Does it mean that AMC is inferior? Not in the least. To real AMC guys they are better and know the complexities of building the car. A 1970 AMX is the AMX. The 390 engine and 4 speed is the choice. Big Bad Orange with Black interior are the colors. When done Would be a Blue chip AMX. Call it what it is.
Don’t always call someone a flipper when posting a car for sale. If you care to know message him to get the real story. If you want a car to restore take advantage of the sellers decision to offer it on the open market and don’t complain.
360 ?…..maybe a 343 base ?
Not in 1970. That was the first year of the new displacements for all but the 390/401. The 401 would debut in 1971.
Steve you always say you can get the Parts for under 5K and if you can you should Buy it!!! A 1970 AMX for $11900 would be great!!!
I clicked on the link and a totally different 1970 AMX came up. It’s happened a few times in the last week or two.
I’ve got to tell you I really enjoy all the listings since I’ve checking BF!
I’m looking for something to put into my new hobby shop and this Bad Boy Orange one sure would look nice in it!
That’s just eBay’s way of keeping you on the site after an auction is over. “That car is no longer available, so look at this similar car instead”
The orange one didn’t even get a bid. The lack of title must really be a deal killer.
As my name indicates I am a fan of almost all things AMC, first without ram air h.p. is 315 secondly the 70 AMX is the one to have, dog leg port heads, plus 4 speed not Borg Warner slush box makes for a more valuable car PLUS AMX makes good Drag cars, 390 can make 600 plus H.P. easily with cast iron heads, if I were still able to work on cars I would be tempted to buy this car, although no good at body work, engine different story
