Army Green: 1974 VW Thing

When it comes to Volkswagen’s Thing, I really prefer that it look somewhat weather-beaten and tired on the outside. A restored Thing just misses the point, in my opinion, as these vehicles were designed to be left outside and abused in all sorts of environments. To see one that is so pretty it can’t even be enjoyed at only a slow, drop-top buggy with removable doors should be is just a shame. Fortunately, this example here on craigslist is just the right kind of rough and tumble so you can get it running and enjoy in its current state of decay.

The Thing is listed for sale for $5,500 with the option to buy a parts rig for $1K. Located in Pensacola, Florida, the Thing would fit right in in a slightly seedy beach-front community. The seller says there is minimal rust and that the floors “…are thick sheetmetal” and could either be used or replaced. The soft top frame is still present, although the roof itself is long gone. No word on how long it’s been sitting exposed to the elements.

The paint is said to be original, which is amazing considering how many have been over-restored or simply rattle-caned in someone’s backyard once the original paint got too tired. I’m curious what the original paint code would have been, as this olive green color seems more fitting for an ex-military vehicle than anything that left the showroom. While I would like to know the specific areas of rust, the Thing overall presents itself as a usable driver.

Except for the fact it has no engine. So yes, there’s more work to be done here in addition to the general re-conditioning needed. The seller doesn’t mention what became of the engine that was here, but perhaps the parts rig has a running drivetrain. The Thing does come with a clean title, so that makes it far easier for it to cross state lines. Beach season awaits and this slightly tatty Thing would make for a willing seaside companion.

For $5,500 it should be drivable . Not junk.

Not worth anything close to $5K! Run away screaming “No, No, No” to this offer. Fun cars, but not this one.

use it for a mafia staff car–Keepa you hands off—

These were a terrible rust bucket. I like the look in Olive drab. Not sure what these bring but this looks way high to me. Good luck to the new owner.

That’s why you don’t see these. They were made in Mexico of poor steel, had no corrosion protection and most have rusted away.

I think this is a solid $3500 car. Check The Samba for going rates for these. Prices are steadily climbing.

I have one faded in a very similar condition. Was once a light green metallic.

(Laughing) Oh hell yeah! Dead leaves in the interior, no seats or frames, and a partial engine! No thanks!
