Artic Blue: 1976 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350

Pat L. found this beautiful 1976 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350 and sent it to our attention. The car is located in Surprise, Arizona just northeast of Phoenix. It is being sold by the 2nd family to own the car here on Craigslist. The seller is asking $13,500 and the ad has only been posted for 2 days. The car has been repainted at least once and is believed to be on the second trip around on the odometer with 83,000 currently showing.

The engine is the original Pontiac 350 cubic inch V8 engine and was rebuilt about 50,000 miles ago. The seller says that he is selling because he does not try the car enough. The carburetor needs to be rebuilt and the car needs some minor attention. Pontiac manufactured the Firebird Formula in two models in 1976 based on the cubic inch of the engine: the Formula 350 and Formula 400. The Pontiac 455 which had been available in prior years was now only available in the Trans Am. The 350 cubic inch V8 engine was the low performer and was rated at 160 horsepower. The optional 400 cubic inch engine which was designated as the L78 motor was rated at 185 horsepower.

The pictures of the interior are limited but the front bucket seats have been recovered and look new. The console is faded and the seller states that the dash is in need of some love. Unfortunately, there are no replacement dashes available so they must be removed and shipped to either Al Knoch or Just Dashes for restoration. This can cost $1,000 to $1,700 depending on shipping and who does the work. I just pulled the dash out of my 1973 Trans Am and am sending it to al Knoch via 2nd Gen Graveyard for restoration. It is no easy task!

The Formula 350 rides on factory 15×7 Rally II wheels that have been powder coated to match the Code 24 Artic Blue paint. The dual hood scoops on the Formula always look cool and the 1976 design is a one-year-only look. This looks like a nice driver for a decent price in today’s market.

Looks like a bargain compared to most of the Smokey and the Bandit era Trans Ams.

When the seller states “Pretty much original, minor changes”, that says it all. Buyer beware as there are a lot of issues without even looking at it in person. Questionable as far as the asking price, and comparing it to any Firebird Trans Am from the same era isn’t really a good comparison.
