Here is a find that really caught our attention. The seller listed it as a 1964 Aston Martin, but we instantly recognized it as a DB4 GT Zagato. It is a replica, but do not let that stop you from taking a look at this car. With works DB4 GT prices in the million dollar range, a well done replica could be a bargain. This car is located in Peace River Canada and is available here on eBay with bidding at $20k and no reserve.
Only 20 DB4 GT Zagatos were produced in the 60’s. In 1991 the factory did build four more works approved replicas utilizing four unused chassis numbers. Then in 1992 another two were produced by Richard Williams. From our research it does not look like this car is a works replica or a Williams replica. It does look like the aluminum body is high quality though and much of the work has already been completed. We would want to talk to the seller and try to wrap our heads around what it is going to take to complete this project.
The seller doesn’t include much information in the listing, so we wanted to investigate this chassis number a little more. Turns out that this car was built using a 1964 Lagonda Rapide which was based on the DB4. With only 55 Rapides built it is sort of shame it was used for this project, but it has already been done so it should at least get finished.
The original works cars came with a twin spark inline six engine that produced 314 horsepower. This car does not feature the twin spark engine, but the Rapide did come with a bored out DB4 engine that produced 236 horsepower so it will be no slouch.
The interior of this car is even put together. It doesn’t look perfect, but shouldn’t take much work to finish. We would want to strip it out even more and attempt to make it look more like the factory race cars. Then we would try to convince one of the vintage racing clubs to let us race it or at least take it on a few road rallies. We would love to see the looks of the Aston Martin guys when you drive up in this. You had better have a story though when they ask if it is real.
We have always dreamed of owing a DB4 GT Zagato, but have always assumed it would be impossible because of their rarity and million dollar price tags. This car makes us think our dream is not too outrageous. It will be interesting to see what this project goes for. It may surprise all of us because GT replicas has been known to go for a couple hundred thousand at auction.
Whoops ! Someone got to him and told him to ask more, and it’s off sale, so someone must have coughed up the 38k he upped it to for “buy it now”. Very cool ride !
