Auction in Maine: Connell’s Auto Collection

auctionmaine2

Connell’s Auto Collection in Maine is a yard I’ve heard about off and on for a few years. I’ve always known them to keep a collection of antique vehicles around as part of their normal salvage operations, but the news of this auction has me wondering if an owner passed away or they’re getting out of the old tin business. Either way, check out the details here on the auctioneer’s website and begin picking out your favorites. I personally like the Checker Wagon and the ’53 Cadillac; I wish they had identified the motorcycle as I quite like that as well! And because I’m a hopeless German car fanatic, I’d grab the Mercedes 190E for a commuter project. But that’s just me – what do you see on the lot list that interests you? And if any of our readers are in Maine, will you be stopping by for a look? Thanks goes to Brian S. for the tip!

If I were closer I’d be all over the Buick Apollo they’ve got.

I had a 1982 Honda CB-750 Custom like the one in the auction. I found it the basement of the local Honda dealership in 1987….it was left over and forgot about and had 0mi. on it…..had never even had oil put in the crankcase! Only paid $1850.00 for it!

Wow that’s awesome Charles! I can’t believe they never even put oil in it. If you have any photos, we would all love to see it! Josh

i too was buying leftover bikes, still in the box, during that time frame and none had oil in them. that was something that was done during setup.

They had a lot of those left over in the warehouses and sold them at less than cost for a couple of years.

I’m not a Corvair guy, but that pretty blue Corvair could change my mind. I really like the lines of it. That Firebird is a very scary looking project, makes the Corvair look brand new!

Thanks Josh!….I’ve been looking for some pics of the bike with no luck so far. I kept the bike about 2 yrs. and only put about 1,300 mi. on it….it was a exceptionally comfortable cruiser.

I think they are saying that Apollo is a Nova because it is the same year the Ford Firetruck looks to be in decent shape . the rest looks like a sad bunch . being in ME, most if not all will have rust issues I can see a few of them being saved tho!

the checker S/W, corvette, and tractor interest me. but there is something for everyone, including signs. before riding that bike i would remove the bags which look to be mounted to far back. great finds

Umm, close inspection of the picture clearly shows CB750 on the side cover and plain as day HONDA on the tank.
As for year, its likely a late 1970s or perhaps early 1980s. Thats a DOHC model, not worth much at all. The SOHC versions are what command money and collectors. 1968 to 70 or 71 are called Sand Cast models and different bodywork as well. Those command premium prices,. bodywork alone is worth a fortune. later were of diecast castings. and any mid 70s CB now command decent money. I had a lot of them and the going rate forever was $300-700. Not anymore. I DID sell a really cherry low mileage 79 or 80 DOHC4 a couple years ago for $2000. Needed a majr service after sitting for years but still looked brand new. But i wouldnt pay squat for another one. Carbs are a PIA, and many other parts not much fun to maintain or service. Thats why no one wants them.

Not far from me. Might take a stroll up. Wife’s working anyways :-)
I just bought another Triumph Bike project so not much cash and ZERO room in the garage so probably a safe trip for me.

Off that day and wife is working. Might take a stroll up. Just bought another Triumph bike project and NO space in garage and shop so probably a safe time to travel to an auction.

I, also, would be looking, at the Buick Apollo; and, that ’60 Chev 4-door.
