Baja Power: 1964 Porsche 356C

1964 Porsche 356c Baja Power Front

Porsche 356s are great sports cars, but they could have always used a little more power. Sure there was the four cam equipped Carrera, but few can afford one today. Even if you can, it would be terrifying to take it out of the garage and even more painful when it comes time for a rebuild. Well, we think we have found the solution. This 1964 Porsche 35C is a solid low mileage driver, but the best part here is what is in the trunk.

We are not sure if that is the original paint, but the seller claims that this car has only covered 56k miles and that there is no rust. No rust is the best thing you can hear when shopping for a 356 because these things are very rust prone. The paint has a few blemishes, but it looks good enough to drive.

The interior also appears clean with no major faults. It is too bad that the seller does not provide more details, but they do mention that they just purchased it this last spring. Supposedly the previous owner had the car for about 30 years. Around 1991 he decided to pull the engine out for some freshening up…

1964 Porsche 356c Baja Engine

That is when he decided to stick this in the back. It is a high performance 1835cc Volkswagen engine which was meant for a Baja Bug. Don’t worry, the original engine is included with the sale. We think you will want to keep the Baja engine once you take it around the block though because it puts out 150 horsepower. That’s substantially more than the Carrera ever mustered. This car will never be a Carrera, but we have a feeling that it is just as much fun with a lot less guilt. If you are interested it can be found here on eBay with bidding starting at $22,500 and no reserve.

356c is one of my favorite things in life. My Pops bought one new from Siegfried Motors in December of 1965.This was back in the day when Beetles and Porsches graced the same floor. This one is a strayed a bit from original for me: seats, engine and weird shit on the dash can only be the beginning of what a more generous picture gallery might reveal.

Any buyer might want to ask which engine was original to the car [impacts retored value]. If one ads up the cost to restore the car as many of the features [interior, mechanicals] would be quite costly and thus render the current bid price as rather expensive for value received + transprotation too.

As long as the P-Car patrol doesn’t get wind of this the bidding might stay semi-reasonable. This is like the proverbial pretty girl who likes to turn wrenches, drink beer, and watch football; Perfect hard to find, low maintenance, fun to ride combo.

Cars with replacement, incorrect seat covers and an engine transplants are rarely low mileage cars. As far as original paint…keep on dreaming.

I think the 150hp claim is a bit exaggerated. It would have to be running much bigger heads/ 48 IDAs, etc. to get those kind of numbers out of a relatively small displacement vw motor. 1835 is a 69 (stock stroke) crank by 92 piston. Very little torque. I’d be surprised if that engine was even breaking 100 hp with those smaller IDF carbs. If given the choice I’d rather have the original Porsche engine sitting back there. The vw motor looks out of place…
