Barn Find Project: 1968 Porsche 912

This 1968 Porsche 912 is a recent barn find in New Hampshire that was parked 25 years ago following an accident that damaged the driver’s side. It was never repaired, and the damaged body panels were removed which included the front fender, door, and bumper. Today, it needs those repairs completed along with rust repairs in the floorpans and front trunk pans, leaving it up to the next owner to part or restore. Find it here on craigslist for $7,500.

To me, that’s a decent price considering the repairs shouldn’t prove too extensive, aside from that somewhat ominous looking dent in the driver’s rear quarter. From the passenger side, you’d likely assume this was just a dusty driver, which is almost correct aside from the non-running condition. The seller notes that the engine spins freely by hand but that they have not attempted to start the car; the entire fuel system will likely need to be gone through before a first-start is attempted.

The interior features a pretty cardinal interior that would offset a silver or black exterior paint nicely. What’s encouraging is that the backseat matches the age of the front seats nicely, possibly indicating this is an original interior. Long-term indoor storage and living in the Northeast has helped keep the dash from exploding into a sea of cracks, and the gauges remain surprisingly clear. The steering wheel is the original unit as well and looks to be nicely preserved. It’s a shame about the floors; things inside look quite nice, otherwise.

Fortunately, patch panels are plentiful for air-cooled cars. Given the state of the interior and the “good” side of the 912, this looks more like a restoration candidate than a parts car to me, especially given 912s have seemingly been enjoying a gentle price increase as the rapid rise in value for 911s has brought lesser models up to the surface. Since 912s never achieved the same level of explosive prices, they remain good values with some modest gains possible if bought at the right price. This damaged 912 warrants an in-person inspection but certainly looks worthy of rebuilding.

Jeff, yes, yes, and yes. Someone will see the logic in saving this car and send it to Porsche Classchise in Germany. Make a real car out of it and spend the money to do so. Drive it for the rest of life. You’ll love it.

Well, someone’s tried to start it. Ignition cylinder appears to be hanging under the dash.

What is it with these Posrches of the Week? Did nobody want to drive them or what? Weird.
