Barn Finds Deal Of The Day? 1964 Mercedes 220S

'64 MB 220S

Yes there were many produced and yes there are many still on the road. This maybe the one that you should pick up if you are in the market for a ’60s something Mercedes Benz that isn’t a 5 or 6 figure car. Listed here on craigslist in Allentown, Pennsylvania is this 1964 Mercedes Benz 220S barn find priced at just $4,000. That’s a lot of luxury car for not a lot of money!

'64 MB 220S seats

The ad only has two images. The story is, according to the seller, that it has been stored in the barn for the past 30 or so years. There is supposedly no rust. The car looks clean and everything is believed to still be there. There is an extra transmission, engine, windshield, and a hood ornament. It actually appears to be a great deal! If one or both of the engines spin and there is in fact no rust, what a sweet ’64 220S, especially for $4K. With the spares included at the asking price this is a great Barn Find! Please let us know if you pick this up and get to enjoy this 220S for the decades to come.

Motor-on,
Robert

No rust? In Penn? And a Mercedes – like to see that ( not impossible I guess)

Some of these had rather odd, semi-automatic transmissions. Pulling the selector back would disengage the clutch.

      Greetings All,

Never seen a Hydrak on a Fin-Tail, seemed to be a Ponton thing.

VERY rare in a Finnie car, indeed.
I have only run across half a dozen in ads and in person and bought 2 of them (which I still have)
The hydrak was ‘fading fast’ by 1961 .
Because the following year Mercedes had their own automatic transmission.

Was called a Hydrak transmission, and there was a torque converter between the flywheel and clutch. Actually worked ok

It is the forerunner of the Porsche sportmatic that won many races in factory team cars in the 70’s.

I responded to the ad, and the response I got back looks like a scam.

It should be Ok to paste the response here, I reckon.

Thank you for your interest in my Finback. Send me your email address and I’ll pull together more pictures.

You can email through CL you don’t need my email! And you’ll pull pictures together?

I hardly think that sounds like a scam.

How easy is it to send attachments via Craigslist?

I’ve been watching the market on these closely for the past couple years. This is not an unusual asking price by any means. The value just can’t be determined without more info and better photos.

I restored mine over 20 years ago and it’s been a great driver. It had been sitting for years as well.

Nice shade of red, David. Care to drop the curtain, and show what is behind it?

Actually I offered to send a bank check and he said “cash in person only”. How inconvenient! Seriously what’s the point of listing it for sale if your only goal is to make it difficult for the seller. I’m taking ALL the risk here!!!

Good morning Josh. I think you meant to say “buyer”. I am one of those cash only folks. I do not use or trust banks. There are even fake certified checks and M.O.’s out there. At least you know he’s not a scammer, otherwise he would have “Sure, send me your money bwahahahaha.”

No scam if I send the money and don’t send a truck for it until after the money clears. I have everything to lose as I can post that photo and take deposits all day long off Craig’s List. Caveat Emptor!

I think you missed my point, how does he cash your check if he has no bank account like me? My comment on the scam situation was, he could always have you send him money if he was a scammer. He says cash in person, sounds like the way I do business.

Thank you, Randy, for your common sense! I am the seller and I am not a “he”. Actually I am following CL guidelines in asking for cash and dealing one on one. Also, I am having problems sending additional pictures via CL so that’s why I asked that other gentleman for his email…..I would have (and have sent additional pictures to others) glady sent additional pictures.

I own and love many Mercedes. This is a nice looking S body car but if I am going to invest cash and emotion in a fin car, I would prefer a higher grade one. At least a 220SE if I couldn’t replace my 300SE. Injection is a huge upgrade and the injected cars usually had more options on them. My 1965 300SE sedan is a masterpiece.

The best one of these I have ever seen was a 220SE? convertible. Man what a car, and it sounded great too.

The coupes and convertibles are truly magnificent vehicles. They are hand built with the best wood and leather trimming. The current prices reflect that the market knows it too.

No clutch pedal, so no fun to drive . . . and to rebuild that automatic immediately doubles your investment (sic). I think I’d rather buy lottery tickets . . .

This car would have been sold already had the seller wanted to take my bank check. Actually I’ve since reconsidered after reading all the comments on this post. Thank you to all the other readers that contributed!

I communicated with the seller and it’s a legit ad. The seller doesn’t sell much on the www, and I can totally understand the cash only part. I wouldn’t take a certified check either; to many fake ones. For me wire transfer or cash, just common sense business on Web based ads I think.

Whatever the story is, from the photos it looks to be a 1960-1963 (August).
This most likely has the drum all around and the older Solex carbs with manual choke.
In this particular case the later model years 64/65 were the better refined cars
