Barn Fresh Shortbed: 1987 Chevrolet Silverado

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you need some indication as to where the market for old trucks is headed, check out this 1987 Chevy Silverado short bed pickup, where bidding has already crested $10K, inching ever closer to the seller’s Buy-It-Now of $13,500. Then again, there’s a lot right with this truck, from the optional equipment to the box of NOS chrome bits the seller is including. Find the Chevy here on eBay with just under two days left and located in Georgia.

The seller says this Chevy went into the garage in the early 2000s as a very strong running truck with no apparent issues. This doesn’t mean it currently runs, however, as the seller notes it had to be pushed out of storage. The Silverado is loaded up from the factory, with power windows, power locks, air conditioning, dual gas tanks, a tilt steering wheel, and cruise control. The missing taillight is the biggest flaw I can on the outside.

Inside, the cabin remains quite nice with a typical-for-the-era bordello red interior. The seller doesn’t have much to say about the cockpit, which is too bad as it looks quite nice and is well worth promoting. The door panels show no faults with storage pockets not drooping too much, and the dusty dash may even be crack-free – then again, this era of Chevy/GMC pickups seemingly didn’t have the same issues with cracking dashboards that my beloved BMWs do.

The seller points to the dual gas tanks as a first step for the next owner, as the tanks need to be cleaned out before any attempt to fire up the truck can commence. The engine bay looks undisturbed, and I’d like to believe with just over 100,000 miles, there’s plenty of life left in this Silverado. With the short bed and near every option box checked, it’s not surprising to see this one popular with bidders.

Shaking my head with ya’. No matter what comes up, there is always someone afraid they are going to miss out on something. We see high prices on these cars and trucks but you have to remember it only needs to be seen by the one person it means something to or has FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
I bought a very similar truck out of Hemmings, had it shipped and it was described as a ten footer but was really a forty footer. Got it, drove it for a month and sold it for what I paid for it plus shipping. Just could not get that taste out of my mouth that I thought it was better than it was. I suspect alot of people get that feeling these days.
      On to the next one.

This is unbelievable. This was a $4,000 truck two years ago. I am definitely a capitalist and I’m not on the Bernie bandwagon but is there is an argument to be made that the economy might be a little too good?

    “Bordello Red”?

Comical that this is being ripped on for having, gasp, some actual color for an interior. Gray, black and tan has been mighty boring for a loooong time.

Bottom line, not many of these left equipped like this and rust free. A proper and careful restoration will make this a fine truck. The ’87 (last year) had the best running engine setup. The 350 TBI in these really was a nice runner when new. We had this same truck but blue with a blue interior back when new and it was very sweet.

It may seem like a lot of money and it is. but clearly someone wanted it and it sold. The engine compartment looks great. Under the dirt and small dents appears to be a very solid truck. Sadly, the dash was hacked up to put the CD player in. It looks like the factory stereo sitting on the floor. The ebay ad claims all new NOS chrome trim is included in the sale. Nice.

Not many left like this. Have you priced a new truck lately? You know, the ones that are so insanely huge and ugly and….. have no color.

Totally agree on the interior colors of today’s cars/trucks….everything is black or gray. Yuck.
The price of this particular truck surprises me because in December I sold my 1985 C10, long bed (gaaaaaaaaaaaaaasp! the horror!!!) in much nicer shape than this truck (and with Bordello red interior that was spotless), 60k actual miles, most everything redone on it, with the added bonus of a 4 speed manual transmission, for a paltry $5,000.
In regards to the particular truck in this auction, you will most likely have to do everything to this truck, as it’s been sitting almost 20 years:
Fuel tanks dropped and cleaned, carb rebuilt, brakes, shocks, tires, probably want to boil or replace the radiator, I guarantee the AC system will have to be rebuilt, etc. etc. and that’s just to get it safely on the road. We don’t even know if this truck runs or not as the seller never indicates one way or the other.
Having said all that, if one is to compare this with the cost of a new truck, even once you’re into this for $20k (which won’t be hard to do once you factor in repairs, paint, and other cosmetics), you’ve still got (in my opinion) a cooler truck than the $50k+ monster trucks that are masquerading as daily drivers these days.

I will have to agree with you Gary, taking into account the prices for new trucks makes this one appear reasonable, plus when You’re done with it, you will have one of the easiest and most affordable trucks to keep rolling down the road, parts are cheap and an easy one to work on, plus you will turn a few heads in the process, good ol trucks………………

    Gashole, I just acquired a ’91 Ford F-350
as a project and I see by my to-do list that
it’s gonna need almost everything you
said here about this truck. The biggest
saving grace my truck has is that it runs
and drives and we got it free from a family member who used it in his tree
business. And like this truck, I’ll have to
replace both fuel tanks along with the
plumbing and all the switch gear needed
to restore the fuel system to original
condition along with all the other issues
that I may find along the way. On the
whole of it, whoever bought this truck
will have much easier time turning it
into a nice daily driver. With the time and
income factors in place, it’s gonna be
five years before my truck is finished.
Good thing is that I’m retired and all I
have is time–just not the cash to get it
    done earlier.
