Barns Finds Are Everywhere!

Shelby Cobra 427 SC

It seems like everyone is jumping on the barn finds bandwagon these days. Even the model car guys are getting in on the action. Just check out this 1/18th scale Cobra I found here on eBay. The seller starts with standard model cars and then spends hours adding dirt, leaves, and rust. The end result looks believable and I have to commend him for his efforts. So, besides on TV and model cars where have you seen the “barn finds” phenomenon setting in?

    Amazing detail! I especially like the requisite cardboard box of spare parts in the trunk!!! I know I had one in mine when I got it.

    Greetings All,

    See it all the time with old guitars.

    They call them relics.

    Relics mean they have scratches, dents, missing finish, poor chrome, cigarette burns, sort of just like cars.

    The difference is that there are a finite number of real ones out there and more players want to own something “old” as they think it gives them some type of “street cred”.

    Because of the limited numbers, the manufacturers have stepped up to the plate and started making them with all defects, some look like they’ve been through WWII.

    You don’t think they charge any less for them do you?

    Nope, they charge a significant amount for this considering it sort of eliminates their quality controls definition of a “second” as now seconds are fast tracked as Relics.

    I cannot imagine the hours put into making that boxed model kit into a “relic”. Impressive! Tempted to buy it as that is the closest I will ever come to owning a Cobra. Well many years ago I did the snap up the last Hot Wheels 1/64 silver 427 Cobra still in the package that Shelby had sitting on his secretary’s desk at his Heart Foundation.

    There are a couple of guys who do junkyard dioramas and sell them on Ebay. They look good in closeup photos, but the fact is, I prefer the real thing.

    There is also a guy known for his garage dioramas. I came up empty with a quick search but he’s pretty well known. If I can find out who he is I’ll update.

    Not automotive, nor barn find related, but remarkable skills along these lines are displayed in the model train world. Often magazine shots, could be confused for real photographs. Incredible talent out there.

    This isn’t the gentleman I was referring to, but this should interest any Barnfinder;
