Best of Japan Exhibitor: 1985 Honda CRX

Don’t look now, but collectors are paying closer attention to 80s icons than ever before. While a car like this 1985 Honda CRX will never be worth ridiculous money, they are still trading hands for more than some skeptics would have ever believed possible. This example is completely stock with rare OEM Honda alloy wheels and the preferred manual transmission. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $6K and no reserve.

The CRX is not the spicy Si version, which bumped the power up slightly to make the light-weight chassis even more sprightly. The car comes with the optional rear spoiler and a set of wheels lifted straight from the factory’s accessories catalog. It’s a better look than the steel wheels that came on lower-spec models like this one, which is presumably a base or DX level trim since it’s not an Si.

The seller notes that due to the CRX’s high state of preservation and overall condition that it was invited to attend the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum “Best of Japan” exhibit in Philadelphia. The CRX has supposedly been cared for since the first owner took delivery, and given the brittle and often damaged plastic trim and nose panel remain unscathed, I’d say it’s likely it was loved since new.

The engine bay remains completely stock with noticeable alterations. The paint under the hood could likely be freshened up a bit given how vibrant the exterior is. Really, that’s the only complaint I have, as it shouldn’t be too hard to make the engine bay “pop” like the rest of the CRX. With mileage recorded as being a mere 51,716, it’s safe to say this is one of the most gently used vintage Hondas in existence.

VERY tempting, the only fly in the potato salad is that it’s not FI (fuel injected) like its Si sibling. I wonder if there were / are any easy Weber carb kits out there specifically for these?

Had an ‘84. Ran great for years til the timing belt broke! The only weak link.

A friend of mine had a 1987 version of one of those that he had bought with only 18,000 miles on it. He drove it between 300k-400k on 2 delivering jobs, until it got rear ended and totaled in December 1999. My friend says that they are bulletproof!

I love Hondas of this era and have had a few. I’d happily daily drive this one.

One of the best cars I ever owned. Jiffy Lube killed mine, drained the engine and put 4 quarts of oil in the transmission.
