The Jeep Jeepster Commando was developed by Kaiser-Jeep and production continued under the AMC nameplate after AMC bought Jeep in 1970. It is somewhat unique to find a Commando in this condition. It just needs some mechanical work to get it running again. The name comes from the Willys-Overland Jeepster produced from 1948 to 1950. This 1969 Jeepster Commando is being offered as a Barn Finds Auction. This Commando has been sitting for about 10 years but looks to be in good restorable condition. This Commando is located in Rockwall, Texas just outside of Dallas. It is being sold by the owner’s daughter after her father passed away.
The base engine in the Jeepster Commando was a 75 horsepower inline 4 cylinder engine. However, all Commandos could be ordered with the optional Dauntless 225 cubic inch V6 engine and a GM Turbo 400 automatic transmission. While the Dauntless Buick V6 was not a turbocharged Grand National engine, it produced a respectable 160 horsepower and was rated at 235 lb-ft of torque from the factory. The Jeepster Commando was available in four different models: station wagon, convertible, pickup, and an open-body roadster.
The interior is a little unkept and has aftermarket front seats. There are no rear seats but the Commando has 5-point racing harnesses. Several upgrades have been done to the Commando including a new radiator, aftermarket HEI distributor, and rebuilt automatic 3-speed transmission. The Dana 30 transfer case has also been rebuilt. The transfer case is controlled by dual sticks, one for the front axle and one for the rear axle.
The Jeepster Commando was produced from 1966 to 1971. After 1971, The Jeepster name was removed and it was called the Jeep Commando after 1971. It was designed to compete with the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Bronco. A total of 57,350 Jeepster Commandos (C101) vehicles were sold from 1966-1971. This example is going to need a little work to get it back on the trail but it looks like a great project and the seller says they are motivated to find a new home for this unique 4×4. when attended to (a lill, as here) these can be fine. Mostly the small lift is what’s needed, tire/wheel to go along w/it. Nice job here. Would like to see up close’n personal. Spent 40 yrs w/my 1st gen bronk and altho hi priced I’m betting these can be presented in comparable condition. For jeep? I’d only go for this (all ‘face lifts, or even the original – 4WD converted) or the 8 (CJ8 or ‘scrambler’). Thnx 4 da post/write up (potential sale).

If it’s like the old Dodge Power Wagons, one stick engages the front axle and one engages the hi/lo. So while you can’t disengage the rear to drive on the front, you can go into Lo while still in 2×2.
but you could disconnect the rear drive shaft to drive front only, if you had to.
Twin stick, mild lift, automatic…this is an ideal trail setup with the capability to dig in and get through ruts and over rocks. I love this…probably a bit too far for me but it’s a great little Jeepster
Can this be loaded on a trailer easy enough for shipping to FL?
Technically yes because we had it shipped via a trailer from California to Texas. We rolled that sucker on and then off. We can do the same for the buyer. Plenty of hands to push it up and onto a trailer.
I’m definitely sorry for your loss! I lost my Dad a month ago as well. Just want to make sure the estate has been settled and this Jeepster has an easily transferable title. I thought the Jeepster was the model that looked more like a car, a Jeep ‘Phaeton” if you will, and they were 2-wheel drive.
