Necessity can be the mother of invention, as demonstrated by this 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. With no Convertible option available that year, the first owner dispatched this classic to a customizer for the drop-top treatment. The results justified the effort, and with warm weather approaching, this Camaro would be ideal for weekend touring. The owner wishes this classic to find a home with a genuine enthusiast, listing the Convertible exclusively with us at Barn Finds Auctions.

Chevrolet discontinued the Convertible version of its Camaro when the final First Generation examples rolled off the line in 1969. Its successor remained Coupe-only territory, and the Third Generation didn’t receive a Convertible until 1987. However, some enterprising enthusiasts took matters into their own hands, and cars like this 1984 drop-top are the result. The first owner immediately handed it to a customizing firm that suitably strengthened the body before cutting away the roof. They added a Black power top, and wind-in-the-hair motoring was a sudden reality. Finished in Code 82E Charcoal, this Camaro is pretty impressive for a survivor of this vintage. The paint shines like a mirror, while the panels are as straight as an arrow. The power top features a new motor and hydraulics, fits nicely, and provides the weather protection the new owner will rightfully expect. The seller states there are no leaks or other issues. Rust isn’t a concern, while the trim and plastic are in good order. This Camaro rolls on aftermarket alloy wheels wrapped in Cooper Cobra tires. Rounding out the exterior is crystal clear tinted glass.

Detroit was rediscovering its performance mojo by 1984, a fact confirmed by this Z28. Its 305ci “HO” V8 delivers a factory-claimed 190hp and 240 ft/lbs of torque. The power figure represents a significant improvement over the 150hp produced by the base 305, allowing the Z28 to perform to a level its badge deserved. A four-speed TH700-R4 automatic transmission handles shifting duties, while power steering and brakes were standard Z28 fare in 1984. Potential buyers will appreciate the good news associated with this turnkey classic. The car has a known ownership history and has recently received a coolant flush and a new radiator. Aftermarket electronic fans keep the V8 running as cool as a cucumber, while the new parts list includes a carburetor, front main seal, battery, spark plugs, and plug wires. This Z28 is ready for action the moment the winning bidder takes delivery.

Trimmed in Gray cloth, this Camaro’s interior is extremely tidy for a survivor-grade classic with forty-two years of active service under its belt. There is slight wear on the driver’s seat, but no evidence of potential developing holes. The vinyl and plastic look excellent, and the woodgrain trim adds a classy touch. Aftermarket additions include a wheel wrap and a Kenwood radio/cassette player. However, this interior didn’t require much enhancing, because the Camaro left the lot equipped with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, cruise control, a clock, and a tilt wheel.

I always admire ingenuity, and this 1984 Camaro Z28 demonstrated how one person bucked the system when Chevrolet couldn’t provide a new Convertible off the lot. This classic appears to need nothing, and the fact that it is a one-off means that it would be unique in any company. It has no apparent needs and is ready for action. If you fancy open-air motoring but want to stand out in a crowd, this Camaro could be the perfect choice to make that dream a reality.

Some of your description info is incorrect. Although Chevrolet did not build a factory Camaro convertible in 1984, they did outsource a small number of Camaros to shops for factory authorized conversions. I know that because I have a 1984 Z/28 convertible that I purchased brand-new off the showroom floor at a Chevrolet dealership for my Mother. Mine is a Matrix conversion, which they made less that 400 of. A few other companies did conversions as well, (maybe Autoform) including the weird looking 2 seat “bat man”conversion. I would be curious to know if the owner of this Camaro actually had the conversation done themselves. If so, that’s quite an undertaking. Cudos to them. If it was a factory authorized conversion, if you look inside the driver’s door, there you will find a sticker displaying the company that did the conversion. I never comment, but since I have one of these Camaros, I thought I would share
