Hatchback, or Notchback, that is the question: whether ’til nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of opening a hatchback or lifting a trunk lid… to misquote Bill Shakespeare, who I’m sure would have been a third-gen Celica fan. Appearing to be one of the nicest ones left, this 1985 Toyota Celica Sport Coupe has the desirable Notchback body style, it’s located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the seller is listing it here as a Barn Finds Auction!

For me, it’s the notchback for the win. On a car that you don’t expect to see a hatchback, like a third or fourth-generation Nova/Apollo/Ventura/Omega, then it’s a hatchback, but for almost everything else, it’s a notchback. This car appears to be in amazing condition, and the odometer shows the mileage as being 58,321 miles. To say it’s been well-preserved is an understatement.

Toyota made the third-generation Celica from 1981 through mid-1985, and they were available in this notchback body style, and also as a hatchback. A convertible, made by ASC for ’84 and ’85, was also an option. I don’t see a flaw in this car, inside or out, and this eye-catching color is called Super Red. The rear bumper is unfortunate, design-wise, but Toyota hit a home run with the angled front bumper, tying in perfectly with their wedge shape for the front of this car.

The interior looks like it’s right out of a 1985 Celica brochure, with perfect-looking seats in this beautiful striped gray fabric. There aren’t any visible cracks, wrinkles, or other flaws that I can see. The only concession to comfort-over-sport is the A40D four-speed automatic transmission made by Aisin-Warner. The seller doesn’t really give any information on this car other than confirming that it’s one of the nicest ones left, but there’s no operating or driving info given.

The clean engine compartment, and I mean really clean (!), is a Toyota 22R-E, a 2.4-liter fuel-injected SOHC inline-four, which would have been factory-rated at 105 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque when new. Backed by the four-speed automatic sending power to the rear wheels, this hidden-headlight gem really looks like a nice one. If you have any questions for the seller, please add a comment and check out this notchback beauty here on Barn Finds!

This is rear wheel drive. I had an 84 GT-S lift back 5 speed. Wish I still had it

Nicely appointed car in the beautiful notchback style SG. Going to be a sweet cruiser for somebody. The 4sp autobox on these Toyotas defines the terms rugged and reliable.

Beautiful car. It looks brand new like it came from a Toyota dealer. Given its condition, I’d be willing to pay around $10k-$15k for the car.

Those 22r motors are bulletproof!! I also like the old Alpine radio with the clear buttons. Man I miss the 80’s
I wouldnt say its overprice something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. I had a bitcoin millionaire fly from cali to S.C. and pay $6400 for an 80’s BMX bike.

That’s what I thought, until the head gasket blew on
      our Granddaughter’s ’85 GT.
And,as I said before, the automatic saps the fun
right out of the driving experience on these.

Prefer the styling on the first gen Celica GT/ST’s a lot better…but those are getting harder-to-find in good condition…subject to rust over the years…but good luck on the sale.

I had an 89 Camry Wagon and loved it. My buddy had the first gen Celica GT, and that was an absolute BLAST! I’m new here, dig this car and would like to contact to find out more about the vehicle. How do I do that? Thanks

Good looking, solid, reliable slow car. The only ones that I ever saw blow a head gasket were ones where the cooling system was neglected. (Not changing the coolant often enough) Once they went fuel injection the exhaust manifold failues dropped significantly. I really loved the GTS models with the upgraded suspension. But they were still slow.

I would like to know more about this vehicle.
    1. Does it leak any fluids?
    2. Is everything operational, Transmission, AC, Radio, Windows, Seats, etc. – can we see it driving?
    3. Do you have any pictures of the underside, is it rust free?
    4. Please note any problems it may have, or if it could be driven across country. My old Camry had timing and suspension that needed to be addressed and seems to be common.
    I’m very interested. Thanks again

Thanks for the interest. No fluid leaks, everything works and operational, ac radio, window seats etc. assembly line condition. I will provide more photos of the underneath and no rust at all underneath. The celica is like a brand new car with zero flaws. It will only need a brand new tires mount and balance if planning it to drive across country.
