With values of BMW’s E30 M3 at an all-time high, it’s no surprise that the values of later E36 M3s are also rising. Aficionados overlooked the E36 for a long time, but it is a great car, and in M form, it is a serious high-performance machine. The example being offered here as a BF Auction was recently pulled from long-term storage and revived. It needs some cosmetic work, but it is said to run and drive well. If you’d love to give it a new home, be sure to cast your high bids below!
The E36 debuted in 1990 but didn’t reach the United States until 1992. It was offered in several trims and body styles. The M3 was the most potent version, with a higher-performance engine, revised suspension, and improved brakes. It isn’t as high-strung as its predecessor, but that’s not a bad thing if you plan on driving it on the street. Reviews of the E36 M3 upon its debut noted how well BMW managed to balance straight-line performance, handling, exhaust noise, and comfort. While it grew in size slightly, the weight gain was not as drastic as one might think, considering the newer M3 gained two cylinders and a considerable amount of legroom.
While BMW didn’t build the E36 M3 as a way to homologate a race car, they certainly leaned into the racer image on the interior. You get highly bolstered sport seats and a very driver-centric dash. At the same time, they made sure to use ample amounts of leather and the power seat controls offer a nearly infinite number of adjustments. As you can see, this one isn’t in perfect condition on the inside, but it isn’t in terrible shape. With some detailing and a few trips to the junkyard, you could have it looking great without breaking the bank. You aren’t likely to find M3s in the junkyard, but you will find lots of 1992-1998 3-Series in the yard that will provide any switches or trim items you need.
Power is provided by BMW’s S50 inline-6 engine. Being a US-market car, this one was capable of producing approximately 240 horsepower and 225 foot-pounds of torque. While not as highly specialized as the S14 used in the E30 M3, the S50 is easier and more affordable to work on. It still offers lots of performance and a great exhaust note. This one has recently been serviced and runs well. It’s paired to a 5-speed automatic and is ready to drive.
The seller notes that the car’s paint isn’t the best, and there’s some body damage. They are including a new fender and rocker panel to help with the repairs. The issues won’t keep you from driving it as is. So, if you’d love to hit the road in this M3, cast your high bids and leave any questions you have in the comment section below.
Nice as this car is, the one I’d want is a ’94-95 540i with the 6-speed manual. I just missed out on buying one a few years back in about the same shape as this car.
Pictures taken from level instead of a drone would help in seeing what’s for sale here. One of the better looking cars ever built with engine to match. Missing rocker panel covers and accident repair needed doesn’t bode well for the asking price so an in person inspection to see what else is going on should be a must.
Bob, right on regarding the photos. What I need to see is what the ride looks like when I walk up to it on any angle. This seems to be a new trend, don’t care for it, and won’t even consider looking at it due to a little suspison that something is amiss. I certainly would do a personal look and if interested, a PPI. Great cars.
The Aero dynamic kit does nothing to help this car sell. This car was nice original especially with the lovely blue color combination.
I live in Connecticut .. the conditions of the paint and interior is not from long term in the shade storage, unless a week qualifies for long term .
Good luck .
You not making any sense sir if you live in the area you should’ve stopped by and talk to me, I never said the car came from Connecticut … the car been outside my business for a week because it listed for sale like all the other e36 if you’re not interested I understand save the negativity please
I see that it’s been sitting. How does it run? Would it make it several hours for a trip back home or would it need to be trailered?
It runs fine you’ll definitely make it home no need to be towed.
