Between emission regulations, higher fuel costs, and safety mandates of the 1970s, Pontiac’s leadership decided the Grand Prix needed to shift to a more intermediate-sized car with more emphasis on comfort. That doesn’t mean they didn’t still try to offer some solid performance options. This ’77 Grand Prix SJ was the top-of-the-line Pontiac, both in luxury and performance. It belonged to the seller’s late son, so she wants to see it go to a good home with someone who can enjoy it as much as he did. She has listed it with us as a no-reserve Barn Finds Auction. If you’d love to give it a good home, be sure to bid below.

The SJ option first appeared in 1969 and gave the Grand Prix some serious performance. By the time this example was built, the high-output large journal V8s were no longer available, but the 400cui 4-barrel was a solid performer for the time. The SJ option also included rally gauges, upgraded shocks, swaybars front and rear, and radial tires.

This example looks to be in solid shape throughout. The interior might be the star of the show, though. It looks to be in good condition and is believed to be original. While an aftermarket stereo is mounted in the glovebox, it retains its original 8-track player (when was the last time you saw one of those?). The seats present nicely, the dash is free of cracks, and even the carpets look to be in good shape. With a deep cleaning, this interior could look exceptional.

The 400cui V8 was rated at 180 horsepower for ’77. While that’s not the kind of power offered by previous SJs, it wasn’t bad in the context of the time. Performance can be significantly improved with a few bolt-on upgrades, and it appears this one has already received a few upgrades. It is said to be in running condition, but the car has been parked, so it would be a good idea to give it a full service before attempting to drive it.

If you are into big, comfortable cruisers, these 4th-generation Grand Prixs are a great option. The styling is unique, the interiors are well-appointed, and the SJ option adds some nice upgrades. This one could be a good example to service and get back on the road. Be sure to take a closer look at the professional photos below and leave any questions you might have in the comment section.

O ‘Jays…YES! Nice car, had a friend that owned a brand new one just like this one. Black on black. 400 motor that ran very well. Smooth quiet ride. Classy car.

Hello Yvonne: does the vehicle currently run and drive? Is there an ac compressor still intact and does the ac system work?

The half vinyl top is tragic, with scab rust under the quarter windows, like most vinyl top cars do.
