Sometimes, a vehicle becomes so integral to our lives that parting with it seems unthinkable. Such is the case with this 1999 Toyota 4Runner SR5. The current owner purchased this unmolested survivor off the showroom floor as his first car, using it as his daily driver until he bought a new 4Runner this year. It has been meticulously serviced throughout its life and recently received additional TLC, making it a turnkey proposition for the winning bidder. With a new home beckoning, the owner has listed this wonderful survivor exclusively with us at Barn Finds Auctions with No Reserve.

Toyota released its Third Generation 4Runner range for the 1995 model year, with production ending in 2001. The latest offering shared its frame with the Land Cruiser Prado and mechanical components with the Tacoma, but the body and trim represented a “clean sheet” approach. This 1999 4Runner is the SR5 variant, presenting nicely as an original survivor. Most of its Silver Metallic paint shines warmly, and the panels are very straight. It has spent most of its life outside, exposed to the Californian sun. Therefore, the matte appearance of the roof and hood is unsurprising. However, a reputable paint shop should be able to address those shortcomings without breaking the bank, which would significantly improve the appearance. The Californian climate has done a fantastic job of preserving the steel. These classics aren’t renowned for rust problems, and scrolling through the image gallery confirms that this beauty is rock-solid. The side steps and roof rack are practical features, with this 4Runner also equipped with a desirable glass moonroof. The 15″ alloy wheels look excellent, and there are no issues with the trim or glass. The tires are said to be newer and have a 7 year/70k mile warranty.

Ordering a 1999 4Runner in SR5 form gave buyers access to the 3.4-liter V6 found under the hood of this classic. It delivers 183hp and 217 ft/lbs of torque, with shifting duties handled by a four-speed automatic transmission. Buyers could order their new purchase with dual-range four-wheel drive, but this SR5 sends its power to the rear wheels. Combine the automatic transmission with power-assisted steering and brakes, and this 4Runner represents a highly user-friendly package. It has been meticulously serviced throughout its life, but has recently received additional attention. It rolls on new Hankook tires, with the braking system also renewed. It received new fuel injectors, a new battery, and has undergone a service and oil change. This Toyota runs and drives well, and is a turnkey proposition promising the winning bidder years of reliable service.

Toyota enjoys a well-earned reputation for producing mechanically bulletproof vehicles. It is also an acknowledged leader in plastic and trim development. This 4Runner’s interior stands as a testament to the company’s abilities. The vehicle has spent its life in the great outdoors, but its interior hasn’t suffered unduly from the experience. Prone areas, such as the dashboard top and door trims, show no significant deterioration or cracks. The cloth trim is free from major wear, and the carpet is exceptional for its age. It features a modern Sony CD stereo as a recent upgrade, which appears to be the only aftermarket addition. Luxury touches include ice-cold air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, and a tilt wheel. The only non-functioning item is the clock, with the remaining items working as they should.

This 1999 Toyota 4Runner SR5 is an extremely tidy survivor, and the company’s reputation for reliability should enable it to ply our roads for many years. Its mechanical specifications promise an effortless driving experience, while the creature comforts ensure that any journey will be comfortable. Fuel economy is impressive for a vehicle of this type, making it a potentially affordable and practical daily driver. With No Reserve in play, this SR5 is guaranteed to find a new home. Combine all of those factors, and it is easy to see why submitting a bid would seem irresistible.

Is the 4runner a awd / 4×4?
2WD with SR5 package
I have a 2005, bought from the dealer who had it as a demo for a year. At 200,000 miles I have just done the ONLY non-routine repair, two new sensors, a new starter since to replace the Knock sensor the labor is the issue and the starter is buried (the V8) in the same place, new shocks, and new CV joints and axel shafts. The repair shop manager tells me it ought to go another 10 years and another 100,000 miles, by which time I will probably be dead. Of the 20 or so cars I have owned, and the 30 or so I have known well, beginning with a ’36 Chevy and a ’39 MG, it is clearly the best in terms of long term ownership/reliability/usefulness.
Did you sort of say this is just a 2 wheel drive???
I bought a 98 model with 100k miles with the same options in 2010. I paid the orig owner 5k. I drove it for a couple of years.. gave it to my son and he drove it a couple of years and then he sold it to his ranch manager as a gofer vehicle. It’s still going at 500k and they have only done gen maintenance. I tried to buy it back last month since I’ve taken my El Camino off the road for new brakes and fuel system. He said NOPE! The best car he’s ever had on the ranch. I might actually be interested in this car..
This vehicle is a testament to Toyota’s well earned reputation for outstanding reliability and durability. The 300k award from Toyota is recognition of the simple fact that regular oil changes and basic maintenance mean you can drive them forever.
Yes, it stated rear wheel drive . Not 4 wheel drive.
It appears to have failed it’s lastest emissions test after considerable amount of repairs per the Car Fax. My guess is that it probably needs catalytic converters as it had a previous failed emissions test also.
It passed smog recently and the Car Fax does not show that. It’s registered and current in California and good to go!
The car recently passed CA smog and is current. It’s ready for its next owner, California or anywhere else.
Will it make a 2300 mile trip?
Great question! All I can say is it’s been serviced, CA smogged and provided with new tires, brakes, battery and a fuel injector. It drives great, shifts fine and the A/C is cold. While there are no guarantees I can say I personally would have no concerns. But that’s up to you to decide. Thanks for asking!
Do you have actual service documents you can upload? All I see are oil changes for 20 years. When were the belts last changed? The coolant pump? Wheel bearings? Plugs? This isn’t looking well maintained and documented to me.
