Almost any Triple-Black classic can turn heads, but only stunning vehicles like this 1973 Dodge Dart Sport 340 can draw crowds like a magnet. This car presents superbly following a recent restoration, but its potent professionally built V8 could be the star of the show. The owner has enjoyed all that this car can offer, but a recent injury means he is forced to part with his cherished classic. Therefore, he has listed the Dart exclusively with us at Barn Finds.
Some cars blend into the scenery like automotive chameleons, but this Dart is guaranteed not to. The first owner’s decision to adopt the “Triple-Black” path ensures it has a menacing visual presence, an impression that is heightened once we focus on its mechanical specifications. The Code TX9 Black paint and matching new vinyl top look superb following a meticulous frame-on restoration. Finding anything justifying criticism is seemingly impossible, with the paint holding a depth of shine and color that perfectly reflects its surroundings. The straight panels and consistent gaps tell the story of a build with an eye for detail, while the sparkling chrome and Rally wheels provide a striking contrast. It is reassuring to learn that this Dodge hasn’t seen wet weather since the build ended, ensuring that this is a rust-free classic. The car’s hood is there for more than mere looks, feeding plenty of cold, fresh air into the powerhouse occupying the engine bay.
As the name implies, this Dart is powered by a 340ci V8. The original motor would have delivered 240hp and 295 ft/lbs of torque. However, this motor promises significantly more. Starting life in a 1970 ‘Cuda, it was treated to a rebuild by renowned professional Steve Trimboli at Pit Bull Motors in Freeport, New York. It is worth noting that this isn’t a customer motor but came from Mr. Trimboli’s personal transport. Therefore, since it was the boss’ powerplant, you know it was built to exacting standards. It features a 0.030″ overbore, a Purple cam, and roller rockers and has been balanced and blueprinted. There’s no point in having a mountain of power if it can’t find its way to Planet Earth. Therefore, the 340 sends its ponies through a new clutch with a fresh throwout bearing and pivot bush to a four-speed manual transmission. The new flywheel features a scatter shield for added safety, while the 3.91 rear end benefits from new gears. The fun doesn’t end there, with the brakes receiving a rebuilt booster, a new master cylinder, new lines, new rear brakes, and new front discs, calipers, and pads. The list goes on, with a new fuel tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, headers, exhaust system, alternator, voltage regulator, starter, steering box, power steering pump, shocks, and a wiper motor. Phew, there is no doubt that the owner left no stone unturned to ensure this classic is in excellent mechanical health. Potential buyers can slip behind the wheel for a spot of immediate rapid motoring pleasure.
The Triple-Black theme naturally continues inside this Dart, with the upholstered surfaces wearing spotless vinyl. There is no wear, no evidence of abuse, and the carpet and seatbelts are new. The dash and pad haven’t succumbed to UV exposure, and the only thing this interior needs is something to occupy the spot typically reserved for the factory radio. Finding a correct unit should be possible, although a more modern retro-look stereo would be acceptable to most people. The heater received a new core and cables during the build, ensuring that life inside this Dart is toasty on cold days. The owner treated the speedometer to a rebuild, meaning it reads accurately. Apart from being spotless, this interior is purposeful. The driver grips a beautiful sports wheel, swapping ratios precisely with a stubby Hurst shifter. The under-dash gauges allow them to monitor the health of the beast under the hood. This gem has a documented 48,919 miles on the clock, which is a mere drop in the ocean compared to how many miles it will be able to clock in the future. The owner also notes that the dash was signed by Richard Petty and his signature is still visible.
Some classics are a triumph of style over substance, proving unable to deliver the type of performance their appearance suggests. This 1973 Dodge Dart Sport 340 is the polar opposite. It presents beautifully, and its Triple-Black paint and trim combination will win many hearts. However, that powerhouse under the hood guarantees that it delivers where it matters…at the rear wheels. The decision to part with it wasn’t easy, but the owner has listed it with us, knowing that our readers are passionate about preserving American classics. This is your chance to do so, but will you let it pass? I think you might regret it if you do.

I can’t get over the huge batteries mopar puts in there cars! I know gm cars aren’t this big with the big blocks, and they all seem to die around four years anyway!
Very nice build. Too bad that I’m not in the market right now. Can’t wait to see how many readers complain that a triple black car in a Northern State doesn’t have air conditioning.
Nice A body, well done. Looks like a great cruiser with muscle. Being a multiple A body owner with experience, The 340 4sp and 3.91’s will launch this little dart sport.
These cars are not 2nd choice to big blocks
They out wind them, launch faster, Never underestimate a 340 A body….. Super nice car.
My brother had a twin of this car and one day he was at the house about 20 years ago and said he would take 2000 for it, I thought he was joking so I didn’t jump on it. He sold it shortly after and I kicked my self for not buying it
Priority on performance. 👍 🏁Cool Mopar. 😎
So to be honest here, after the 70’ model year the super nice body styles began an ugly trend, the huge bumpers, half vinyl roofs, plain ordinary dash, etc…….nicely restored no doubt, that driveline belongs in an earlier Dart 340……..
Are any videos available of the car running and driving?
Sorry to hear about your health, hope you get better. I sold my LM29H1B 71 340 4 speed Demon about 3 years ago an I’m still kicking my ass for it, you’ve got a beautiful car and i feel you can get more IMHO, hope things get better for you brother.
How much more does the motor promise?
How much more does the motor promise? I can’t make an offer sight unseen. Will the owner contact me. Thanks
Put the stock tailpipes back on!
