After we featured this 1977 Ford LTD in 2022, reader Jeff M bought it on a bit of a whim. Its previous owner used it as their daily driver, and Jeff has continued to use it on a regular basis, but he doesn’t have garage space for it right now and decided it deserves to go to a home where it can be kept indoors. It’s now being offered here as a Barn Finds Exclusive in Royal Oak, Michigan, with a clean title and an asking price of $3,300.
The LTD line was Ford’s upmarket trim level for their full-size offering, putting it at the same level as a Mercury in terms of standard features. Its long wheelbase provided ample legroom, even in coupe form, and a smooth ride. Styling was similar to the Mercury Grand Marquis, which it shared a platform with, but it was more understated.
The seller admits the car has some flaws, but that it runs and drives well as it. The carpet has been removed and will need to be replaced. There’s also a tear in the driver’s seat. The dash appears to be complete and in good condition. A set of aftermarket gauges were added by a previous owner to give you more details on the car’s health. The seller states that all of the lights and systems work as they should.
This LTD is powered by a 351M V8, rated at 149 horsepower. The 351M was based on the 400, so parts are plentiful, and there are lots of performance upgrade options for those seeking more power. The seller states that the engine currently runs well and sounds great. A previous owner installed a dual exhaust system, so one popular upgrade is already done. The car is riding on a new set of tires.
The seller notes rust issues in the A-pillars and a hole in the floor pan. They’ve provided photos of the issues for closer inspection. They admit it might be best used to build a hot rod or as a demolition derby car, but they hope someone can keep it on the road instead of sending it to the scrap yard. What do you think? This is not something you see running around anymore. That front end struck a memory when I saw the picture with the headlights on…telling a buddy “hide that beer, there’s a cop behind us!”

Raised whites and dog dishes look great on this car. One of the few cars that look good as a sedan, too. Nice highway car.

This Ford LTD would be a great car for a rat build or a mild custom. Minor rust issues aside $3300.00 or a near offer would also be good basis for a daily driver car. Love these old Fords. Had a 1969 LTD Brougham fordor back in the early 80s. Great car and rode better than any Cadillac or any gm brand.
Thanks Mark. If I can not sell this car I will still use it but rat it a bit. I need to be able to carry a lot of lumber so a wagon suits me better. But the rear seat out and huge trunk might allow me to do something cool. IDK, it is a fun smooth car. Appreciate the comments
I have to disagree, nobody ever said when referring to a good tide… “hey it rides like a Ford” But “It rides like a Cadillac “ yep that saying goes back for at least 60 years. I’ve rode in and driven both.
It does handle the accidental curb hop flawlessly.
I had a ’75 LTD. Rode like a Rolls Royce. And the 351M was a tough engine. I tried to kill it a couple of times.
Different car and different year reminds me of Burt Reynolds in White Lightning believe its the dog dish hubcaps gives it that look. This would be fine as an daily driver comfort and cool looking car you never see these anymore.
Exactly! That was the look I was going for but his was the gen before with cooler bumpers. Under cover cop meets moonshine runner… huge trunk, beefy tires. his was 4 door. Gators car.
You nailed on the look also a very fair price good luck with the sale. One of the car magazines did a story on a guy who built the same car as the movie down to even the four speed.

Mechanical upgrades: New Tires, imitation rally wheels, oil change, replaced leaking oil plug (was leaking badly) starter motor, had A/C fully serviced will not hold charge (operational but “compressor has leak at the rear”)
Needs: brake inspection/work, alignment, balancing if the intention is to drive over 35mph. (I use this to roll up to my kids sporting events and they love it… and to go to Home Depot)
A pillars leak, especially pax side
I looked at the pictures of the documentations and had to grin at the starting instructions. Hard starting, flooded engines, it’s all coming back now. First thing I would do is throw that carburetor in the trash and replace it with a throttle body fuel injection unit.
I showed that to my son and he said “wait, it has a key”?
I had a 78′ LTD coupe like this in the mid 80’s. It was silver with the cranberry roof and vinyl interior. No rust or rot, with 80K miles on it , I bought it off a second hand dealer’s lot for $850. I used it as my winter ride in New England. You didn’t need to worry about that rear end slipping in the snow. Throw some of bags of HaLite in the trunk that could fit a set of tires and whatever else you could find at the boneyard. If you had a few too many, you could go to sleep in the back seat and the next morning have coffee at Mickey-D’s in the front seat. It was a very cool ride.
Now this is a right-price Hooptie!

Good luck with the sale. Reminds me of the car my wife drove when we met in 1979. Similar color, one of them, brown, I think but with tan interior. She called it Freddie the Ford. I worked on and drove that car, hauled a canoe on roof top, loaned it to neighbors, and finally sold it for salvage.
40 years since and never missed it. Seeing this one and reading the comments, reminds me of younger days, and very different impressions of the 1977 LTD II.
I personally owned pony, muscle, and trucks. So Freddie was never anything more than my wife’s car she bought from her mom for $500. By the time I spent that much or a little more to keep it going, sold it for scrap.
Another example of as a 10 year old car in 1987, these just were not worth much. Making it to 50 years old is unusual and apparently makes it worth more to the right person.

The appeal is the nostalgia… we had a 69 Charger and traded it for a 1974 LTD wagon when my sister was born, then a 78 LTD 2.., i swore to avenge this travesty yet, here i am driving an LTD. It’s what im familiar with. countless memories
