In my life, I have seen many significant cars be cheap one day, and expensive the next. This is what drove me to buy a 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 a few years back. After watching these cars languish for years at the lower end of the Porsche marketplace, it dawned on me that the 964 chassis cars were on the rise – and fast. From being a chassis design that Porsche produced very few of when it was new to many project-grade cars being purchased and converted by Singer into million-dollar masterpieces, the 964 has entered new territory. Despite this, I’ve decided to sell mine in pursuit of other projects and a general realignment of priorities.

Now, let’s get one thing out of the way early: this is a Cabriolet model with a hardtop “conversion,” so to speak. When I was researching the 964, I realized that a company in France called D. Moris had developed an exacting replica of the elusive OEM accessory hardtop produced by Porsche in the 1980s. Very, very few owners invested in the pricey option, and today, an OEM hardtop will run you $20,000 or more – if you can find one. This option is not exactly cheap, but it’s far more affordable. The D. Moris is also quite light, and uses OEM Porsche gaskets and glass. It’s really a very high quality unit, and I’m quite happy with the end result. It makes no rattling or rubbing noises and the car truly feels like a coupe inside.

This 911 was a West Coast car for most of its life. It was purchased new by actor Christopher Lloyd in California, and then lived in the Pacific Northwest. The third owner moved it to Arkansas and performed a significant amount of maintenance. You can check out my entire history file on the car here, which includes original documentation and service records. Basically, you get to take a peek at my time with the car without actually seeing it. The power seats and windows work, and the A/C was rebuilt by a previous owner. The dash does have some cracks, but I have a NOS Porsche dashboard in the box, which I’ll include with the sale if the asking price is met.

The owner before me installed a few upgrades that are easily reversible but also make the car a hoot to drive. This includes a Steve Wong chip, a Cup muffler, and a Fabspeed carbon airbox. I have all of the original parts. The factory color is Dark Blue, which is fairly rare; it also does a wonderful job of “masking” the line where the hardtop meets the body. Many, many people believe it is a coupe until they look closely for the third or fourth time. The engine has asked very little of me in my time with it, and the owner prior to me spent a good amount of money servicing it, including a new oil cooler and distributor belt.

I installed a set of Speedline RUF wheels, which are staggered and fill out the arches perfectly. The previous owner also installed Bilstein shocks and H&R lowering springs, which give it just about a perfect stance. The ride quality remains excellent, and the tires are brand new with less than 200 miles on them. The lips of the wheels were refinished under my ownership. I also have the stock D90 wheels mounted on new tires, which will be included with the sale. The center caps are genuine RUF items and very hard to come by.

As much as I love the sound of an air-cooled Porsche and the enthusiast community around them, I have come to realize that with three young children, I enjoy the cars they all can ride in far more than the ones that really only accommodate one of them (and a vintage 4×4 is far easier to wrestle car seats in and out of). I am happy to speak with anyone about this delightful driver of a 911, and hope that one of you becomes its next caretaker. Thanks for checking out my Barn Finds Exclusive!
