Big Block Bruiser: 1972 Dodge Demon

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Dart Demon was Dodge’s version of Plymouth’s popular Duster fastback compact. The car didn’t sell as well as its alter ego in 1971-72, so Dodge did a rebrand in 1973 to the less aggressive-sounding Dart Sport. The seller has a nice ’72 Demon that packs a potent 383 cubic inch V8 under the hood (added later as the 340 was the top option from Dodge). Located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the muscular Mopar may need nothing but a driver and is available here on craigslist for $23,000. Jack M. is the source of this great tip!

Dodge’s Demon was essentially a Duster with a Dart front clip. The rest of the body (except for taillights) was borrowed from Plymouth. As perhaps a compromise, Plymouth got its version of the Dart Swinger (hardtop) and called it the Scamp. As the story goes, Dodge caught some flak from the religious community for the implications of the Demon moniker, so after two years, the car became the Dart Sport, a rather anemic Plan B. Which do you like better for a muscle car, the Demon 340, or the Dart Sport 340? Ironically, Dodge brought the name back 35 years later as a model of the Challenger.

We aren’t told much about this 1972 Demon. For example, was it originally a Demon 340 that was later upgraded, or was it a Slant-Six that underwent a serious makeover? What we do know is that the 383 (from what year?) has been stroked, but by how much? Apparently, that work was done recently, as the motor only has a few miles on it. The transmission is floor shifted, but is it a TorqueFlite or something else?

The body, paint, and interior look great, with the latter being new. The wheels and tires are also said to be new. So perhaps this is a turn-key hot rod that needs a new home where it can be properly broken in. For the seller’s asking price, you’re not likely to find more muscle car than this out there.

This looks like a nicely done Demon at what would be a good price to some of my MoPar pals. The only detraction is the whammy on the rear bumper so if the rest is as good as it’s talked up to be it’d be a good one for going with the Cars and Coffee crowd.

This is a very desirable car with a 6 cylinder price. Someone is going to steal this, even at asking price. I can’t find a fault except it is too far away from me.

Trying to figure that shifter. It looks like something out of a Bendix catalog.

For 23k what’s with all that wiring spaghetti under the hood? A 340 would be an all around better fit in my opinion.
