How big is your checkbook? This 1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible was heavily modified back in the day and looks to have been sitting for a while, hopefully inside. The car is listed for sale here on eBay and 3 days remaining in the auction. The Corvette is currently bid to $7,300. It appears as if the whole front clip and the rear tail light section has been replaced with 1980 parts. The car is located in Jackson, New Jersey.
The interior is trashed but does have the seats dash and gauges. The console is a mess and the door panels are gone. I am not sure what the original color of this car was but it could have been red. The dash pad doesn’t look too bad. The car looks to have an aftermarket radio and an automatic transmission.
While the seller is not specific, he states that the car was originally a big block Corvette. The original engine has been swapped for a 1973 454 cubic inch V8 engine. If this is a Corvette engine, I believe the engine designation is a LS4 which generated 275 horsepower and 395 lb ft of torque in factory form. The engine will run but the car is not in any kind of condition to safely drive it and will need a lot of work get it back on the road.
Rust is a terrible word in the world of car enthusiasts. While the paint looks shiny, the undercarriage of this car shows signs of neglect and possible rot. There is not mention of the condition of the bird cage so I would inspect this car in person before putting down any hard money. The seller discloses that the flywheel is bad and so the car comes with a new flywheel. He should include a Zip, Eckler or Mid America catalog because the new owner is going to have to source a lot of new parts!
Why Why Why they took the best looking C3 and ruined it. If you want a 1980s Corvette then go buy one.
Looks like what happens to a once beautiful movie star after bad bad plastic surgery. NEVER, I repeat, NEVER disfigure a chrome bumper C3 in this way. It was bad enough that GM did it.
Except there were no convertibles after 1975. I like the look of the 80’s parts on this car. I had a new 68 and everyone preferred the looks of the C2 at the time. And the prices still validate this view. There’s nothing great looking about chrome bumper C3’s, the soft bumper cars are better looking, they just have lousy engines. But the engines can be swapped out, originality is highly overrated.
One again, brain damage is a terrible thing.
What a mess, makes me wonder a lot about the one who felt this was a good idea to screw up this car like this.
Tree-fiddy, that is my maximum bid on this Loch Ness monster.
YMMV.
How to take a valuable 1968 Corvette roadster and turn it into junk.
I own a 68 Vette, looked at this one and did a medieval face palm! What in the crystal meth infused mockery is this?
Good luck with the sale, but not for me.
Not even worth half of the current 7K bid.
Looks like a mullet.
Ist time i seen an Oldsmobile steering wheel in a corvette – the 2 extra spokes may be sporty, but block some gages.
Imagine the outrage if an olds or buick or pontiac v8 was put in too. lol
I would think the entire rear section was replaced too, since the ’68-72 rear is all one piece.
Perhaps the car was hit front & back & these late ’70s front & rear clips were just layin around or ez to source? – how expensive are ’68 front & rear clips?
Cost about about a grand to haul it to Texas. If owner pays towing fee I will take it off of his hands. Just because I feel bad for the car
This car is a mess, but I really like the 80’s parts on a convertible.
Unlike a lot of guys on here, I keep them all original. ‘31’s still have their 4 banger, ‘51 still has its 216 (235, if you want to get frisky), 64 VW still has its pancake. My 120s still had that worthless 6 banger DOC. Worth engine but I kept it. All kept their original upholstery and paint color. I hate ‘32’s with 350’s, and pink Cadillacs. Ok, old school, but this ‘68 is a little (OK), a lot for me to swallow. I am a monster for ORIGINAL FACTORY MUSCLE MONSTER CARS. My fav is the Ford GT, and I don’t even like Fords.
The biggest travesty of all BY FAR was GM replacing the best looking corvette of all’s 4 rotor motor with a common pushrod 350!! – & this was a concept car yet, whose styling puts the current vette to shame – especially on the back …

Oddly, it did not have hidden wipers, like many production cars of the day.
Since 1 can put an early 80’s corvette body on a ’68-72 chassis, can the reverse be done? Too bad the birdcage wasn’t aluminum or stainless steel in this gen – or in the ’63-67 for that matter.
