Bitcoin Bandit: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The owner of this 1979 Pontiac Trans Am has listed his car for sale here on eBay and stated that he prefers Bitcoin for payment when the auction is concluded. Currently, the car is bid to $28,100 and there are 2 days remaining in the auction. While the Trans Am has all the correct stripes, decals and dash bezel, this is not an authentic “Special Edition” or Y84 optioned Trans Am. Many uninformed enthusiasts also call it a Bandit Edition, even though it was never designated by that name. The Trans Am is located in Buffalo, New York and appears to be a fairly solid car.

The interior is very nice and the car dash and steering wheel have been updated in gold to match how a Y84 was optioned from the factory. However, the shifter plate was also inlaid with a gold turned bezel. The seats appear to have been recovered and the carpet looks new. The car is not highly optioned other than T-Tops. Typically, we see air conditioning, tilt steering and power windows on many late 2nd generation Trans Ams.

This Trans Am is equipped with the base engine for 1979 which was the K code 403 cubic inch V8 engine. It was rated at 185 horsepower and only available with an automatic transmission and a high ratio rear gear (2.41 to 2.87). If you took a $50 credit, you could get the 301 cubic inch V8 engine which was only rated at 155 horsepower. If you wanted the most powerful engine, you could get the W72 400 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 220 horsepower. The W72 400 cubic inch V8 was only available with a Borg Warner T-10 4 speed manual transmission, 3.23 rear gears, WS6 suspension and dual turbo mufflers. The W72 engine was built with a 800 cfm 4 barrel Rochester carburetor, high capacity 60 psi oil pump, special cam, baffled oil pan, special piston rings, and 8:1 compression heads.

While this car is not an authentic Y84 car, it was originally a Code 19 black car that looks to be in nice shape. The seller states that the car does not have any rust and has owned it for 2 years. The reserve has not been met but this car should sell in the low $30k range.

I don’t get it – you can buy a car that DOES exist,
with a currency that DOESN’T exist?

I see headers on that 403. Wonder what other surprises might be hiding.

I wouldn’t even know how to convert it to bitcoin, other than taking the couple hundred bucks in pennies and shredding them into bits

I’m trying to figure why it’s uniformly so high off the ground. Way too much wheelhouse clearance and too much money for a trim package that’s been faked with with the Olds motor.

    I would think few ’79 t/a’s came w/o A/C.
Unlike the Pontiac fuel pump, it looks like you can change this Olds one from the top without getting underneath.
Tach needle stuck at highest rpm.
