Blank Camping Slate: 1969 Ford E-Series Camper

What can be better than an affordable classic camper with low miles that is ready to drive? Well, despite having 77,467 miles, this Camper isn’t perfect, but is a fantastic basis for a camper project. The interior appears to be empty offering an opportunity to make this camper as you see fit. With a little over a day remaining in the auction this camper is only bid up to $560.00 with a buy it now available for $5,500. Take a look at this bare bones pop top here on ebay out of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Thanks to Matt Williams for this camper submission!

Packing V8 power, this camper has an engine that is easy to work with a ton of parts availability. With low miles, this 302 V8 is a healthy runner, but has an oil consumption or oil loss issue. The seller seems to think the rear main seal is the culprit, but the seller mentions that one quart is required every 220 miles. I would definitely think there is an oil consumption issue going on with that short of distance for that much oil loss. 302’s are fairly easy to come across, so worst case scenario you are looking at rebuilding of hunting down another engine. Also the transmission has some oil loss issues as well, so when doing the engine perhaps throw some fresh seals at the transmission as well. Despite the oil issues, the seller has installed a rebuilt carb, as well as performed other maintenance to this camper.

Stripped inside, this camper space can be updated and made a little more modern and utilitarian per your needs. Unfortunately there aren’t any detailed photos of the interior, but from what can be seen, it would seem to be in fair condition. The pop top portion of this camper was leaking at one point to which it was sealed with an “automotive sealant” that is described as water tight, but not exactly beautiful.

Very original in appearance with only a few glitches to report, this camper appears solid with only one major area of concern. The passenger side rocker area ahead of the rear wheel arch is rotted, but beyond that, it would seem there is only surface rust to report. Also there are a few minor dings on the body, and the paint while present I assume has some condition issues based off of the sellers comments. This one certainly won’t win a beauty contest, but is a great opportunity for a classic camper project at what could be an advantageous price. What would you do with this classic camper?

First I wouldn’t be calling it a camper. Campers are those things that slide into a bed of a truck. Second, I think some orange shag and incense burners would be a good touch.

At that price, empty, with that many issues? Pass and move on. It’s interesting, but not -that- interesting.

eBay buyers seem to think it’s worth between $1,250 and $2,550, that is the window it’s been bid to the last three times it’s was listed for auction. With the engine problems and what appears to be a gutted interior that’s about right. It’s not a high demand item, especially this time of year.

Growing up, we had the dee-luxx version of the same van with the same pop up top. That thing traveled all over the country. Good times.

I had one that was a 1969 E300 1 ton with the same motor and 8.75×16.5 tires. I used it for years bike racing and put 300k miles on it. It was a tank. It would go anywhere.
