Blue Coal Rollin’: 1982 Mazda B2200 Pickup

When you’re rollin’ coal, what better way to do it undercover – i.e., not in a jacked-up, black 4×4 – than in this 1982 Mazda B2200 Diesel Pickup? I personally can’t think of a better way, but we all know that I like my vehicles a little different. This blue coal roller is listed on eBay with an unmet opening bid of $2,000 and even at that the reserve won’t be met. It’s located in Molalla, Oregon and you could drive it home, but you’ll have to tow the extra, running parts truck that goes with it.

Do any of you remember the old radio show, The Shadow? One of their main sponsors was “Blue Coal” which was anthracite coal from the Pennsylvania-based Glen Alden Coal Company and it was sprayed with blue dye as mainly a marketing gimmick. That’s a long way to go to explain the title of this post, but hey, I listen to old time radio 10-12 hours a day when I’m on the road so blue coal is burned into my brain, so to speak. Sorry for rambling on and on about coal so much and not talking about this great looking truck!

This is one nice looking little truck. I know that a few of the regular Barn Finds readers have owned Mazda B-Series pickups and this one  really looks like a winner to me. The seller says that this truck “is in excellent condition inside and out.  Runs great on biodiesel or regular diesel.  Price includes identical parts truck with good engine, running gear and title.” I’m really a fan of these small trucks and with this Mazda being a diesel it just adds another unusual and useful touch. It really looks like it’s in great condition.

With “only” 137,000 miles on it, this truck is probably just now getting broken in. This is the only interior photo, unfortunately, but it appears to be as close to being in perfect condition as I would ever expect in a 10-year old truck let alone a 35-year old truck. This B2200 has a 5-speed manual and should get around 38 mpg on the highway and 27 in the city. That’s hard to beat, especially for such a nice looking little hauler for this price. Is it as fast or as powerful as a new diesel pickup? Why would you even ask such a question!? Wait, I asked it.. never mind. (for the record: no, it isn’t as fast or as powerful as a new diesel pickup is)

The B2200 has a 2.2L inline-four Perkins diesel. Here’s where the not-as-fast-or-powerful part comes in when I tell you that it has 58 hp. I say, when I tell you that it has 58 hp. I know, your motorcycle has almost that much. This truck was originally made and shipped to a dealer in North Carolina in 2-4-82 and then it went 20 years until being registered and titled, in Georgia, in 2002? Then it spent 6 years in Indiana where it had a “left front impact with another vehicle” on 6-13-09. And then it ended up in Molalla, Oregon where it is now. The accident seems to have been repaired without a trace. If I didn’t have my little Dodge D-50 Sport pickup this truck would be very tempting. Is 58 hp enough for any of you to consider a “classic” little diesel pickup?

“Your motorcycle has almost that much”? My motorcycle has nearly 30hp more. And it’s considered underpowered, even when it was built 20 years ago.

Sweet looking truck. I remember when Mazda trucks looked like this. I consider it damn unforgivable that the Diesel powered Mazda didn’t last on the US market. I believe that if nothing else, it would’ve made an awesome work truck, and the diesel engine, even a turbo-diesel, would’ve given it better fuel economy.

Thank you. Not all classic and vintage car enthusiasts are heterosexual, with a girlfriend or wife. There are LGBT enthusiasts as well.

This is WAY COOL! Here I sit in tiny Molalla, OR and this comes up on BF?!

I should buy a lottery ticket. Or something.

Would love to see this gem up close though.

I remember seeing only two diesel-powered Mazda B2200 trucks in person. It’s a shame that small displacement diesel powered trucks weren’t sold in the USA in very large numbers like they were in other markets. Emissions be damned, I believe that those who need or want a small truck with a diesel engine should be allowed that option.

I’m afraid I’ve lost count of how many cars I’ve owned since I’ve owned and driven.

I bought a gas powered B2000 in 1984. Drove it for 20 years, gutless wonder that it was…

I have a 1984 Mazda B2200 with the 2.2L diesel and I would like to put a turbo on it. If anyone has any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. Wondering if there’s an exhaust manifold out there that would work or if I have to modify one.

I call it a travesty that the small displacement (2.0-3.0 litre) diesel isn’t offered in large numbers in the USA.
