Breezeway Roof: 1963 Mercury Monterey Custom

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In 1963, Mercury reached back to the 1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser and the 1958 to 1960 Continental Mark series to borrow the roof line of some of its models. This was called the Breezeway. In 1963 and 1964 it was available in 2 door hardtop and 4 door sedan models. In 1965 and 1966 it was available only as a 4 door sedan. By 1967 and 1968, it was an option on 4 door sedans and didn’t have the unique reverse slant design and lowered only two inches instead of fully. Here is a 1963 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 door hardtop with the Breezeway roof feature for sale here on eBay in Pipersville, Pennsylvania. Thanks to Barnfinds reader Miguel for bringing it to our attention.

The recessed rear window lowered fully by a power control from the driver’s seat. The feature not only allowed fresh air flow through the car but provided sun protection for rear seat passengers due to the unique roof design. This car is finished in Sultana White which has had some paint touch-ups and still has some minor imperfections. There is no rust on the body of the car. The bumpers have been re-chromed.

The interior is finished in medium and light rose colors. The fabric front seat has a sizeable rip, but the rear seat looks magnificent. An aftermarket radio has been installed without compromising the dash. All interior features work including wipers, lights, radio, gauges, speedometer, and the power rear window.

The engine is a Marauder 390 cubic inch High-Performance V-8 and has a Merc-o-Matic Automatic Transmission. A lot of updates have been done including a new carburetor, distributor, wires, plugs, fuel pump, belts, battery, filters, brakes, tires, exhaust, and shocks. It is offered at a Buy it Now price of $14,000. How would you like to ride around in this unique model?

Mercury Turnpike Cruiser 1957 had a reverse rear window. As did the 1958 to 1960 Lincolns

The ’63 is my favorite Mercury ever, beautiful from every angle, and this is a flattering color scheme for this model. If only I had a good place to store it, I would make it mine. And if I ever win the lottery, I’ll be in the market for a hardtop, a convertible, and a 4-door sedan–I love all of them.

Looks like there’s a serious tranny fluid leak going on here.

Don’t know if it is serious or just long term but it sure does look like it is leaking. Good catch. It is a nice looking car, I remember one of my grammar school teachers had one of these.

Good looking car both inside and out. In ’61 Mercury took a break from the medium priced market due to the residual poor sales of medium priced cars from the recession that began in ’58. By ’63 Mercury was starting to reenter the medium market with this wonderful entry which competed with the Pontiac Starchief and Olds Dynamic 88 during this year.

I remember being with my mom and dad looking at 1 of these as a used car in 1966 and I thought the rear window was really cool I had visions of laying up in there with the window down of course back then kids could do stuff like that and get away with it 🤔..but they ended up buying a new 66 merc with A 410 4bbl and that was cool too

This caught my eye because I have had 3 of these. My S-55 was this color with the aqua naugahyde, I don’t know how to spell this, interior.

They were all great cars and loaded with style.

Nice car. The breezeway rear window is one on those great ideas that never made it like a center mounted headlamp that turned with the steering wheel, 4 wheel steering, and others. A shame it’s not still around today.
