British Forces: Shorland Armored Patrol Car

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

When it comes to former military vehicles, many of the ones we feature have been “neutered”, in a way, with their hardcore firepower already removed. That’s not the case with this fully-armed Shorland Land Rover patrol vehicle that Barn Finds reader Ikey spotted. It retains a .30 caliber machine gun turret, and would certainly get the attention of the next guy that cuts you off. Find the Land Rover here on eBay with an opening bid of $10K and no activity as of this writing.

Shorland was responsible for building armored vehicles for Royal Ulster Constabulary  (no way I would have known that, thanks Wikipedia). Interestingly, as this is a later model, it should be bereft of its machine gun turret, if I understand the production timeline correctly. However, this example is either from a cross-over year or it was retrofitted, but whatever the cause, I’m sure it makes it a good deal more desirable to those of you in the business of collecting military artifacts.

The seller doesn’t offer much detail on its history, most interesting of which would be the tale of how it got to the United States. It’s road-registered in the U.S., which is somewhat incredible and reminds you that everything can be registered if you try hard enough (or live in a state with relaxed registration policies). The Shorland is said to be mechanically….fine, just a bit in need of fresh cosmetics if you want it to be pretty, which it absolutely should not be.

The seller says he has “…use(d) with the kids at parades,” which likely quickly shames the other fathers who bought their kids a petting zoo or a horse or something else that pales in comparison to anything with wheels and a machine gun. The Shorland is based on Land Rover underpinnings, so other than bullets, your local Land Rover specialist should be able to keep it running. Speaking of, parking it next to some yuppie with a $100,000 HSE with Louis Vuitton piping is the first thing I’d do – how would you use it?

Just what you need for the War On I-4!!
Traffic here in Florida is very bad and
hardly a day goes by that you don’t see
a story on your local news about someone being shot to death in a road
rage incident. Having one of these would
make some angry driver think twice about pulling a gun on you!! Just swinging that turret around and pointing
that .30 cal. at him would delight me to
no end as I watch him crap himself
while running back to his car!! Oh, the
    fantasy!!

Been there Tod! Used to go with my SIL
on long distance runs when she was doing Uber. OMG! the things I saw over
there! On one trip, I saw a car cut around
a truck that was stopped ahead of him.
The car jumped the curb going around the truck and back onto the highway–
where it almost mowed down a woman
who was crossing the road on foot.
Sis told me that the woman was crossing
with the light when the car nearly hit her.
Then there was the guy on a crotch
rocket riding a wheelie down US 19
    down near Nebraska Ave. …Really!!
WTF is wrong with these people anyway!?
Does everyone there have a death wish
when it comes to driving?? The roads
near Universal and Disney are dangerous
too. We’d heard a story on TV about a
driver on I-4 who shot 2 people after being cut off by the aforementioned
driver. Coming back from Old Town
    near Kissimmee was a dangerous
proposition after that. Note to self:
if you want to get home in one piece,
    avoid using hand gestures while
    travelling on I-4.

I would love this. I have been a life long military vehicle fan and wasn’t aware of this existing so thanks for sharing.

If i am correct it still has 3 smoke grenades on each side of the turret.
Instead of a big problem why not just launch 1 at that real…..driver. once the road isn’t visible they will slow down or hit something that will i guess really slow them down.
Wish there were interior pictures looks like a good deal to me for the price.

The Brits fielded some tasty armored scout cars over the years. I guess the coolest U.S. one was the M8 “Greyhound”.
