Built in the USA: 2000 BMW M-Series Z3

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Z3 was a 2-seat sports car built in the U.S. (Greer, South Carolina) by BMW (1995 to 2002). While coupes and roadsters were offered, 93% of sales were for drop-top versions like the seller’s car. With less than 40,000 miles, this sweet survivor needs nothing but a new home and comes with an Experion AutoCheck report to verify its history (mostly annual registrations).

Z3s were the first BMW products built solely in the United States for domestic and export consumption. For lower production costs, the Z3 used the shorter E36/5 compact platform. Power for the M-Series was supplied by one of three inline-6 engines (depending on the destination country and model year), with the 3.2-liter I-6 being in the seller’s car with a 5-speed manual transmission. During its run, more than 297,000 Z3s were assembled of which 279,000 had the canvas top.

We surmise from the AutoCheck Report that this Beamer is being offered by its third owner. Its low mileage and apparent condition indicate it is an occasional driver, perhaps for weekend outings. The car is said to be 100% stock, and everything works as it should. The body and paint look quite good as does the interior with leather bucket seats. It comes with a BMW-branded wind blocker that the buyer can install.

Located in West Chicago, Illinois, this BMW is available here on eBay. The current bid is $11,334, and the reserve is unmet, but the seller says he/she is willing to entertain “fair offers”. If you’re into this line of sports cars, does this look like a good buy? BTW, the factory in South Carolina offers tours and I recommend you visit it while in the area. There is also the Zentrum Museum worth checking out.

Here is my 2000. I bought it about six years ago. I really like the style and not a leak in all that time. Easy to maintain! Thanks for the story Russ . This M will make someone very happy.

I had an M roady, it was a great car and very fast….Be sure to check the rear end as there is a known flaw in design that causes the support mount to pull away from the trunk floor and to crack… Too much power for the way they designed it. There are fixes out there but most require welding, etc. Lots of threads abou tall this out there as well: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1979601-Subframe-trunk-floor-differential-mount-failure

Even with this issue, it is still a great car!

It would be easier to access an offer if the seller offered a bin. These are great sports cars but you have to factor in maintenance and up keep with any BMW new or used. With just 40k miles and good service records this could be a good deal. It depends on the seller how good.

My gf really wanted a z3 after our florida trip , as canadians in winterland it doesn’t get much use but its a good car , not as good as my ex tiptronic boxster but good , i wish the M version would have had the button shifters like the boxster cause i hate shifting manual !
These cars have many electrical flaws surrounding the air bag system and something with the rear end brace ´s ripping out from the floor pan , an easy search online , these cars typically go for $25 to 30 in the montreal region

Always liked these and the Audi TT. When they were first built the whole roadster thing was dying, except for the Miata, and Porsche always was beyond the reach of mere mortals. Good looking example.
