Barn Finds team member Josh reminded me of a significant anniversary this month: one of the most beloved car chase movies turns 50 this October, and of course, I am speaking of Bullitt. We felt it was appropriate to feature this 1968 Dodge Charger that is presented as a surprisingly rust-free example with some great colors and original options. The seller has it listed here on eBay with a $28,500 Buy-It-Now and the option to submit a best offer.
The last time I referenced building a Bullitt clone, I was ripped apart pretty dramatically for the featured Charger not being completely historically accurate per the movie car – so I am in no way suggesting you do that with this Charger! It does, however, look like a solid foundation for a build of your choosing. The seller says it has just 44,000 original miles with no rust in the floors and a clean body. The original paint code was “Medium Green Poly,” which could be the same paint the car is currently wearing.
The seller notes the original interior was dubbed “Contrasting Green”, so perhaps a re-trim happened at some point. It was spec’d as a bucket seat car with center console, so other than a color change (potentially), not much has changed. Other notable features include the Tic Toc Tach, but if you’re looking to shift yourself, be prepared to make a swap – this is a 3-speed automatic car, originally paired to 383 V8.
And if you’re considering building a tribute car, the manual transmission is a big deal. A few years ago, a ’68 Charger came up for sale that was claimed to be the “Camera Car” from the original movie. I’m not sure whether it was ever proven to be the genuine article, but the intrigue that surrounds the Bullitt cars is one of the more fascinating aspects of automotive folklore. Regardless, this ’68 Charger looks like a great foundation for a sympathetic restoration or patina-heavy restomod. How would you bring it back to life?
So, what we have here is a car someone started to take apart, with “no rust” except for the holes in the trunk, the rocker panels, and who knows what under the vinyl top, needing a full restoration, with “some parts” in the back seat, plus and an engine and auto tranny on a pallet in unknown condition, for only $28.5K? Such a deal. Only thing missing is “ran when parked”.
And no windshield… that should add a few hundred to the seller’s price!
Prices are out of control
Yikes, and to think these Mopars were fairly cheap when new.
The car is overpriced. I would have a 383 4bbl, Automatic (my age is showing)
A/C and updates underneath such as disc brakes, suspension where necessary,
Electronic Ignition if I were to drive it on the Street, a necessity for my cars.
My mother had a 1968 RT in burnt orange color. She wrecked it and it had to be repainted and somehow us kids talked her into changing it to plum crazy purple. Right after this, within days, it was in another accident and totaled.
“minister of administration” What a great name, it cracks me up!
Poor Charger: “burnt” orange and “crazy” purple…it was an omen…
D’oh!!!!!
“Contrasting green?”
Had a ’68 GTS that had the GG1 interior with pearl white seat skins & door panels.
Absolutely gorgeous in the sun, looked almost black & white in darker conditions
One of my 68 gts’s was light green FF1 with white vinyl roof all green interior, other 68 gts was gg1 outside all green interior
GG1 is a favorite color for me.
I’d suspect this car is a little more rough than is being presented. And I agree, the seller is testing the market with the asking price and is at least $10 grand too high. It’s an SE trimmed Charger.
Has it got any petina?? 😆
It’s as good as it gets for a frame off but the price is iffy. If I win the lottery I will buy it after negotiating terms. $28k is too much of a bite.
Bob
I would give .28 cents for this pile of junk mopar!
Another rusty overpriced Mopar. .28 cents may be too much.
They just played “Bullit” in the theaters for a special two day showing to celebrate the 50th. Me and the wife had to go to see the “chase” on the big screen. It’s a funny movie to watch since all you can think about is bring on the car chase while your watching it.
I love the chase scene in the movie where the hubcaps fly off, are back in the next shot, and then fly off again.
That is not a tick tock tach, that is a clock with a second hand!
Bullitt? wuz that S. McQ in a 390 GT stang 2+2 fastback?
Y a Charger? oh, they’re both ’68, got ja, sorry.
68 Chargers didn’t have headrests. The seats are probably from a 69 Charger.
Not an option Keith ?
15k too high, unknown motor and a trans on a pallet = basket case/ project. I love these Chargers, but not at $100k + before it’s done . Pass
.
I’m not a lead sled kinda guy, BUT…That pic that Robert White posted made my jaw hit the floor! BEAUTIFUL!
Was that the Merc?
Agreed!
Love that chase seen, maybe the best. Favorite part for me is when the driver of that evil black Charger buckles his seat belt, grim expression and all… and suddenly that Dodge takes off, all 440 cubic inches smokin the tires up that hill, with McQueen popping the clutch and roaring in pursuit. Never get tired of that chase from start to finish, the rest of the movie is just okay.
