Bullnose Diesel: 1985 Ford F-250 XL

Two legendary items in one picture: first, you have a Ford F-Series pickup from the “bullnose” generation, one of the most beloved eras of Ford’s iconic workhorse. Second, this F-250 is equipped with the 6.9L IDI diesel engine, an absolute brute of a motor that is well documented for being virtually unkillable and able to rack up crazy high miles. The seller’s truck has the added benefit of appearing to be mostly rust-free and sporting low mileage (for a diesel, at least) of just 131,000 miles. Find it here on eBay in a no reserve auction, where the seller notes he’s willing to end things early for a good offer.

When Ford rolled out the 6.9, it was a clear sign that the company wanted to enter the diesel fray and go head-to-head with General Motors. At the time, GM basically ran its diesel trucks unopposed, leveraging its relationship with Detroit Diesel to drop its torque-monsters into everything from pickups to city buses. Between wanting to add some competition to the domestic diesel marketplace while also providing a heavy-duty truck offering with better fuel economy to address consumer concerns over efficiency, the 6.9 IDI engine, built in collaboration with International Harvester, will go down in automotive history as a major win.

While the low miles alone would have you believe this truck is ready for another 200,000 miles, the interior condition is also quite convincing that this Ford has been looked after. That’s not necessarily an easy quality to find, either, considering how much abuse these rigs are built to take. The tan interior is also susceptible to dirt and soiling, but all we see here are general signs of wear and tear, such as in the heel pad of the driver’s side carpet. The seller notes this F-250 has had just two owners from new, which is another reason why this truck still presents as well as it does since it hasn’t been out through the ringer of 4 or 5 different owners.

When new, the IDI engine was good for upwards of 170 horsepower and 368 lb.-ft. of torque. Ford’s engine utilized indirect injection along with a cast iron block and head. To put it simply, this was an anvil of an engine, built to withstand everything a farmer could throw at it or a general contractor with multiple job sites to visit. The bullnose era of the Ford F-Series is one of the most cherished by Ford fans, and when you add the beefy diesel engine option, it becomes even more of an icon. Bidding is sitting at $7,800 with no reserve and the auction ending on Saturday.

Not bad for a 40 year old truck, wonder if the firewall is blown out.

Now THIS is a Ford I would be happy to park in my driveway. Both owners clearly appreciated what they had in this handsome monster.

What is the gear ratio of the front and rear axles?
Nice truck. I have owned 3 6.9L and they are killer workhorses.
