Buried Alive: 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Mach 1 was an optional performance-oriented package on the Ford Mustang from 1969-78 and then again in 2003-04. It has also returned to the line-up starting with 2021 models. The package combined both sporty looks and a certain degree of muscle to make it a popular choice. In 1971, for example, one out of every four Mustangs sold had Mach 1 identification. The seller’s car has been stashed away for years in a crowded storage unit and needs to be restored and put back together. Located in Orange City, Florida, the car is available here on Facebook Marketplace for $4,900 firm.

For 1971, the Mustang got its most extensive styling update since the 1964 introduction but still rode on the same Falcon-based platform. Features of the ’71 Mach 1 included (but are not limited to) a “SportsRoof body style (aka fastback), black honeycomb grille with sport lamps, special decals hither and yon, wider wheels and tires, racing-style mirrors, a unique pop-open gas cap, and a competition suspension (heavy-duty springs and shocks). Out of 150,000 Mustangs built that year, 36,500 of them were the Mach 1.

Commonly used in the Mach 1 was a 351 cubic-inch V8, which the seller’s car has with a 4-barrel carburetor and C6 automatic transmission. This Mustang has in excess of 100,000 miles and looks to be held captive indoors with lots of other stuff around it. Most of the front clip is off the car, so getting it running again will take some time and effort.

Because of its surroundings, it’s hard to determine the condition of the body and sheet metal on this Ford, but at a minimum, the floorboards are shot. Large, gaping holes are present and much of the interior looks to be missing or in storage. The gold exterior paint and black vinyl interior would have been a great combination when this car was new. The Mustang comes with a Marti Report but no title, just a Georgia Bill of Sale (although the car is in Florida). A car like this can fetch mid-five figures when restored, but this one is a long way from there.

Not sure what you are buying for 5K. The floors are gone, the front clip is gone, the engine compartment has been trashed. Maybe it has a nice VIN tag? But what do I now… maybe someone will snatch it up and dump 6 figures in it. Sure would be nice done.

Nicely optioned car with a desirable Powertrain but this body is going to need a significant amount of work. Even the cowl is rusted through. Unfortunately this car wouldn’t make sense to restore if you have to pay someone to do all the work for you. Very interesting to be an IL sold car with the smog system installed. I didn’t know you could do that.

Fred Flintstone would have enjoyed this car. Even has the courtesy hole for Barney in the passenger seat to give that extra boost!

A total rust bucket and no title, what a find….not!! Doesn’t look like there is much metal left on this car that doesn’t have rust. A definite no go car….

Not worth it unless the parts are there to show it. For parts car only. Been there did that on a 72 that was even that bad. Not worth it.

The car is in Florida, comes with a Georgia bill of sale and no title.

Sounds great. I’ll wire transfer funds right after I get my head examined.

Once restored the owner can drive it down the Las Vegas Strip, while playing the James Bond theme, and imagine being Sean Connery in Diamonds Are Forever, with Jill St. John in the passenger seat. However, throughout the extensive and expensive restoration, he or she will have to temporarily change the lyrics of the film’s theme to “Rustholes Are Forever”.
