Bush Find: 1972 Chevrolet Suburban

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Typically something designated as a “Bush Find” sounds like a lost cause, but this 1972 Suburban is not a lost cause whatsoever.  Here is another “ran when parked” type of situation, and the seller believes that with little effort this Suburban could be up and running again after sitting for a “few” years. Either way, for the $2,500 asking price, I know I am intrigued. Check out this bush find here on craigslist out of Rhode Island. Thanks are in order to AMXBrian for this overgrown submission! Thanks AMXBrian!

While the photos are limited, we can sort of get an idea about this Suburban. For instance, the interior looks a bit dirty, but overall appears in very fair condition. I just wish they would have taken the time to open the door so we could see more detail. There is no mention of the drive-train or mileage, but Chevrolet engines and parts from this generation are easy enough to come by.

The Passenger side looks much nicer than the driver side due to some obvious rust. It is unclear how solid or rough this suburban may be. The passenger side mirror is beyond rotten, and the tires look like they are either low on air, or that they have sunken into the ground. Having been left outside in Long Island weather means this Chevy has taken on a few harsh winters left in the dirt. I am a bit optimistic and think that this Suburban could be a great project for the asking price. Would you take a chance on this bush find?

Cool old ‘burb! I hated this color when I was younger, now approaching 60yrs. old, I think it’s a good look on old trucks. Not a bad price IMO.

Ahhh, the ol 3 dor (actually 5 as 2 back’uns swing L&R like house doors). Yeah, Kevin – either this or the forest (kelly? hafta ask the wife) green seemed to B bout 80% of the ones seen.

Really hard 2 tell what’s goin on…pic thru pass frnt window throws me off due to reflections (or is the floor gone, dash’n glovie all crinkly)?
Bout 150K for mileage…nuttin in the verbiage re: its condition.
How long it’s been on da ground? unknown…

Price wise – the RI economy is still in the dumps as another prt of the country still not back after 10 yrs…

Chad the Rear Doors on the Suburban are referred to as Barn Doors, not house doors.

i had a 69 for about 10 years. great truck. id have to take a close look at the underside of this one if its been sitting sunk into the ground for long. the frames are big and strong, but close to the wet ground like that for a few years can cause some concers

Brings back memories of Scouting. Our Scoutmaster had a 3 dr…it was the mule that led the caravan to summer camp.

The biggest station wagon one could buy in ’72. The old man had a Suburban exactly like this ( except it may have had a white top) to pull our campers. In all our travels, to Florida every year, I don’t ever remember it letting us down. ( unlike a certain Travelall) Still popular to this day. Cool find.

This one reminds me of Scotty Gilbertson’s recent comment about pink Cadillac for sale: “There are no engine photos as per US law with Craigslist ads (kidding, but it seems that way)….” The BF staff writers are talented and funny.

Could that be a third-pedal and a three-on-the-tree? Nice rig from when a Surburban was still an “Everyman’s Car”, and not the optioned-out zillionaire’s “Bling-mobile” they are today.

I believe you are right. The automatic shift quadrant would be above the 4 way flasher switch on the column, and I don’t see it. I just don’t get what kind of person would order this and still get a stick, unless it was a delivery truck of some sort, and many companies did use these for delivery.

People in snowy areas order sticks.

I never saw so many stick shift cars as when I moved to Oregon for a year.

Anything that could be gotten in a stick was for that area.

My dad had a light blue/white ’74 with 454 4-bbl. Got all of 5mpg when hauling our 31′ Airstream. Dad got rid of it after the lower sheet metal started looking like lace curtains. Sure could haul, though!

Three on the tree and school bus yellow……The 1970s version of the “Short Bus” perhaps?

Ummm… Mr319, avocado is green. I had a 3Dr ’69 GMC Suburban. Former Wyoming Hwy Dept vehicle. Red paint right over the old black and yellow…no sanding and primer. What a cheap way to go. Came with a 307, 3 spd floor shifter plus a low low. Had to replace it with a 350. But, that thing ran and ran and ran. 11mpg.

I am not sure why I typed that I meant to say Okra.

GM spells it ochre. Personally, I think it’s too much on a vehicle this size, I prefer the two tone ochre & white.
