The Ford Mustang GT is perhaps the single most recognized muscle car of the last few decades, especially in Fox body guise. From its awareness among the muscle car crowd to its relevance in pop culture, few other cars from the 1980s have had such staying power. In addition, it remains one of the more accessible “collector” cars that has a good chance at increasing in value while still being affordable enough that you’re not afraid to use it. The 1988 Mustang GT shown here on eBay wears a very pretty color combo of Cabernet Red over Titanium, and is listed with a Buy-It-Now of $20,995.
The listing is also open for bidding, but the current bid price is a long ways from that target number. The Mustang is equipped with the preferred 5-speed manual, which isn’t guaranteed to be a feature in this era of Ford’s predominant muscle car. Plenty of buyers chose the automatic transmission, so you’ll have a bit of a hunt ahead of you to find one that’s both stock and equipped with three pedals – hence, why the seller may feel motivated to ask a big number for this specimen. I don’t love the chrome wheels but plenty of others do; if it were mine, give me the factory “Turbine”-style wheels.
Inside, the gray cloth interior is in respectable condition, though I do see some bolster wear on the driver’s bucket seat. Recorded mileage is just under 62,000, so this car is on the low side. More impressive is the fact that it remains in stock conditio, which is hardly a given for these easy-to-modify Fox bodies. No word on whether this one has working A/C but given it appears to be in a decent state of preservation, one would assume the previous owner kept it functional. Then again, the rebuilt compressor in my ’87 BMW 325is just failed about six months in operation, so you never know.
Ah, how nice to see a factory airbox with no open element filters in this engine bay! With 225 horsepower on tap, the GT was actually pretty powerful for the late 80s, which were still climbing out of years of reduced performance and horsepower-choking equipment. The GT was known for being a decent handler, too, especially if you upgraded the sway bars and shocks. I’d simply update the suspension, put the stock GT wheels back on, and not touch anything under the hood with a clean Fox body like this, and hopefully, for a few grand under the seller’s Buy-It-Now.
Nice car. Always good to see an unmolested Fox Body.
Adam wrote it up on April 9. That’s fine, it is interesting to see different comments from different writers.
I thought this looked familiar. I think, without looking back, that it didn’t come close to the seller’s Buy It Now price.
