Historically, one of the least expensive ways to get into a classic car was to purchase an old VW Beetle. Bargain Beetles have become hard to find now, but you might feel this is one listed here on eBay. The buy it now price for this 1972 Beetle cabriolet is a low $1,850 and the seller is entertaining even lower offers. It’s located in Wellington, Ohio.
Sure, it needs help, with dents and rust visible pretty much everywhere. However, everything is available for Beetles, it’s just a matter of how nice you want the finished car to be.
The seller states the back section of the floor pan will have to be replaced and based on what we can see hanging down and on the floor I’d have to agree.
While the interior looks pretty rough, again, everything is available. The seller is including a “nice set of front seats” as well although they are not pictured.
The seller tells us that the auto-stick transmission is “intact.” VW used these transmissions, which are actually a three-speed manual attached to a clutch operated by vacuum. There’s also a torque converter in the driveline so that the car can idle at a stop without stalling like a “traditional” automatic. Other than that, we know zilch about the mechanical condition of the car apart from the fact that it won’t steer at the moment as there’s no ignition key to unlock the column. What do you think? Is this cabriolet the answer to your need for a convertible to restore over the winter? Or would you rather leave this bug for someone else?
I’d like to have another Bug, but it would have to be a convertible, or preferably a rag-top sunroof model. But the prices have gotten a bit high, and I just don’t want a big project car. Is there a nice driver with a few needs for say, $5000?
“the seller is entertaining even lower offers”
Good for them. That’s the only way this is going to get sold…
