Campsite Ready: 1976 GMC 26 Motorhome

With the summer travel season shaping up much differently than it has in the past, there’s been an uptick in interest in RVs and motorhomes, not to mention pop-up trailers and other camping apparatuses. It makes good sense, as there are plenty of respectable places that you can park an RV and maintain appropriate distance, allowing for at least a temporary change of scenery. This 1976 GMC Motorhome is a great option for a first-time RVer, and the seller notes that lots of maintenance has already been addressed, which hopefully means a shorter list for the next owner to tackle before going on that first big road trip. You’ll find the GMC here on eBay with bidding up to $8K and no reserve.

These GMC-built campers are really coming back into style, and their rise in popularity was already underway before COVID-19 hit. The slightly smaller size and attractive styling make for an easier transition for the first-time motorhome pilot, and the mechanical bits are generally robust. To me, the GMC is a homerun simply because it was never a mess of disparate parts cobbled together by a large-scale motorhome manufacturer, with headlights from a Dodge Ram and tails from a school bus. Modern RVs are ungainly with less-than-attractive styling, whereas you can clearly tell the GMC was designed and built in-house. The seller notes tires, brake lines, and airbags are all new.

Inside is clean, but not perfect. The motorhome belongs to the seller’s father, who he claims has owned several of these front-wheel-drive GMCs. The cabin isn’t perfect – it’s certainly nothing like the yellow-and-green one we featured a few days ago – but it’s not funky, either. Some alterations have been made, such as the original furnace being removed with a free-standing LP unit plumbed into the bus tank in its place. The generator runs intermittently and while the A/C works, it’s not cooling the driver’s compartment. Other recent maintenance that’s been crossed off the list includes a new water heater, front wheel bearings, and lower ball joints, and gas tank cleaning/repainting.

The rear conversion seating is gone with a makeshift bed in its place; personally, I like the factory set up better, and for presentation purposes, the mattress with a messy sheet thrown over it isn’t going to win the seller any style points. The floors have been upgraded to real hardwood, which is a sharp look, and the fake wood trim in the instrument cluster looks fair. Overall, this is a good starting point for a project that would likely look immensely more appealing with a freshened up interior. While the seller acknowledges the need for a paint job, motorhomes like this tend to do better price-wise when the interior looks like the kind of place you’re eager to lay your head. Clean it up and enjoy, or sell it for more later.

It looks like crap inside. One might get the impression they don’t want to sell it.

No mention at all about the most important part in the coach: the engine. Which engine does it have? 455 or 407?

      1973-1976 would have the 455, the 77-78 ones have a 403.

If you find one at a decent price, buy it and give it what it needs. You may have a need for it you may not anticipate.

Seems like a lot of these have come up lately. I guess everyone that has one decided mows the time to dump these on some gullible purchaser with pie in the sky dreams. Did the clas A thing will never do it again.
