Can You Identify These Clown Cars?

Reader Alan R spotted some rather odd little cars parked out in a field. He could tell they were old and that they had clearly been used as clown cars, so he snapped some pictures. He must have seen our recent feature on the Mystery Pontiac because he just sent in his find in hopes that we could help him identify these clown cars!

From Alan – Hi everyone. Love seeing Barn Finds every day. The following pictures were at a place in Wisconsin near Wisconsin Dells called Dr. Evermor Sculpture Garden. The place has some of the most unusual collections of sculptures in the world. I don’t know what some of these cars are, maybe some readers can help?

I think Alan came to the right place for help! They both appear to be Crosley CC Convertibles built between 1947 and ’48. I’m not a Crosley expert though, so I’d love to hear what you think they are! Leave your guesses in the comments below.

Our thanks to Alan for sharing his sighting with us. If you’ve spotted some interesting that you just can’t quite identify, snap some photos and send them to mail@barnfinds.com so we can ID them!

Crosley convertible? Between ’39 and ’52.

Manufactured in Richmond, IN and Marion, IN.

Attached is a photo of an example in the Wayne County Museum in Richmond.

Details indicate these were built by the same Crosley’s that owned Crosley Broadcasting and the Cincinnati Reds at the time. Plan were to produce the cars in Richmond and Marion, IN.

Powered by a Waukesha 150 Cub Twin (530cc air cooled L-head) with a three speed transmission connected via torque tube to the rear axle.

They are in really rusty rough shape. You would have to talk to Dr Evermore to find out. He was still alive two years ago and there at the park , his ex wife was running the park then.

Look like normal, run of the mill (if you can call them that), Crosley convertibles. Not sure of the year, but front end looks like late 40s generation.

Even as a Barn Find, a clown car is no less creepier.

I can’t believe you printed an image of Rosco The Clown’s car! Don’t you know what happened to the last person who made that mistake? The hair is standing up on the back of my neck.Get out of the house! The calls are coming from inside the house!!!

I’m worried the portrait artist really DID capture Rosco’s likeness.

The yellow one was called a convertible sedan. It once had a frame around the doors and quarter glasses with a ragtop. You can see it was cut off behind the doors. The other one was called a hotshot convertible. I agree with Ron, both 1947s.

Google imaged “Rosco the Clown”. It shows a older clown that seems to be unable to close his mouth in every picture. It can’t possibly be THE Rosco the Clown. Maybe he retired and passed on the name to this guy.

Coulrophobia – an irrational fear of clowns.
See Stephen King’s “It” — not either of the movies.

Powell Crosley was into refrigeration, radios and radio broadcasting; and cars; among other things. He invented the first refrigerator with shelves in the door, the shelvadoor. Did crosleys have storage shelves in the door? Were the optional radios Crosley’s?

Those are 49-50 Crosley. convertibles. They originally had side widows as a sedan and the top snapped on over removeable crossbars. The top was really flimsy and sagged between crossbars when it rained. If you picture a Ford Model A400, that’s was the look. I had a 50 Crosley conv As my first car. Paid $40 for it and I think it was overpriced. Good thing it was so light- mechanical brakes.
