Candy Apple A-Code: 1966 Ford Mustang GT

Some cars just look so right, even in as-found photos. Take this 1966 Ford Mustang GT: with its squared-off proportions and meaty stance on tires that are too big for the wheel wells, this thing just looks mean. Better yet, it has all the right stuff, from the GT package to being an original A-code car with its matching engine still under the hood. You’ll find the Mustang here on eBay with an $11,000 Buy-It-Now and the option to submit a best offer.

Making the package even sweeter is the presence of the 4-speed Top Loader transmission, factory front disc brakes, air conditioning, and solid shock towers and frame rails. Depending on your color preference, Candy Apple Red paint is also a bonus. The seller notes the Mustang was retrieved from a barn out west, where it had been for many years. Pictures show a front bumper is included but no word on the availability of the rear assembly.

If you’re like me, you’ll dig the matching red interior, which is holding up nicely despite years of storage. The interior strikes me as being all original, and the dash pad and door panels appear to be holding up as well. The seller notes that the car isn’t a perfect barn find, as there is rust in the driver’s side lower quarter. Curiously, despite the claims of it being a western car, there is a vintage registration sticker in the windshield from Kentucky.

The 289 V8 does not currently fire up, but the original 4-barrel carburetor is included. The shifter is free and moves through the gears, and the seller notes that the key stickers / VIN tags are all present and accounted for. There’s no doubt this Mustang is equipped with the right stuff, and the GT kit adds heavy-duty suspension, “GT” gas cap and stripes, and beefier sway bars. The asking price seems fair to me, but I’ll leave it up to you to determine if it should sell at this number or with a best offer.

I’m not sure if i ever seen a VERY early ’65 V8 mustang with 13!!! inch wheels & 5 lugs!! Or even a 6 cyl with 13’s & 4 lugs. I would like to see just how skinny the bias ply treads were on those cars, since the correct whitewall ! tire treads on the ’67 shelby super snake are very skinny.

I had a ’65 coupe with the 6-cylinder engine, 3-speed manual, manual steering, manual brakes, 13″ wheels, and no backup lights. It was originally from Texas, so it did have A/C. The wheels were definitely skinny, but it had radials fitted by the time I bought it.

Where are the fog lights? And I’m pretty sure the only Mustangs that came with disc brakes were Shelby’s.

All 1965-66 GT’s had disc brakes.

Only on the front :) You can also look for a much beefier sway bar. That said, the GT (even early) should have the pony interior and woodgrain steering wheel, glovebox, and instrument panel. It would also be fitted with fog lamps, which you should be able to identify by a unique drill hole in the front next to the radiator (where the wiring would pass through).

Jon you hit it on the head, the heavier the sway bar the better. Between the sway bar and radial tires, its the best mod you can get for a unibody Ford. I put a 1 1/8 sway bar on my 65 falcon convertible, and along with Granada spindles, which lower the front about an inch, this thing handles like a sports car. And we all know what a p*ss poor design that front end is. I talked to an engineer at Hotchkiss Engineering at SEMA, and he said when you go hard into a turn the sway bar actually assumes the same rate as the springs!! Hope this helps someone.
