Captain’s Seating: 1990 Chevrolet Suburban

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

I keep hoping for the magical combination of a rear-wheel drive wagon with a manual transmission to show up on my door step for kid carrying duties, but it hasn’t happened yet. Then I see monsters like this extremely well-preserved Chevy Suburban U.S. Conversions “Custom” and I wonder why I’m so hell-bent on a wagon. This minty specimen has quad captain’s chairs, rear A/C, barn doors and more. You’ll find it here on eBay with just 41,500 miles.

The captain’s chairs alone do it for me, along with the stunning wood trim that is in remarkably good condition. The blue cloth and carpets all appear to be in excellent shape, and the seller notes this Suburban was in the long-time care of an elderly owner. As he purchased it from the previous owner’s estate, I’m guessing that individual drove less and less, helping the mileage stay low on this cherry Suburban.

The back row of captain’s chairs is really what set this one off for me. It looks so damn comfy! The clean carpets and door panels further support the notion that this Suburban’s low mileage claims are accurate. The only real issue inside the cabin is the headliner is sagging. The seller notes there is some evidence of prior accident repair but nothing significant.

The drivetrain consists of a 5.7 TBI and 700R4 transmission sending power to the rear wheels. This should be a fairly bullet-proof setup for the next owner, and parts are in generous supply. All smog and emissions equipment are still intact, and the seller says it goes down the road like a new vehicle. If you’re looking for a vintage people-mover that will probably get you from childhood through the teenage years, this U.S. Conversions Suburban is hard to beat.

I’ve been driving Suburbans exclusively as daily drivers since 1994. I’ve owned 3, having put 250K + on the first 2 without major repair. Great vehicles for whatever you need, and great in the snow, even in with RWD. My ’94 was only RWD, and it had no issues in any snow storm, even the blizzard of ’95. I deliver milk to grocery stores for a living, and we go out in all weather.

Yeah, someone picked up a nice truck for ( relatively) peanuts( $5,500) You couldn’t replace this truck for ten times that amount today. You can spend the banks money where you want, but buy something like this, and have $45,000 dollars to do something else with.

I’d gladly trade this for my immaculate 94 K5 Blazer

I think this is perfect! If you have an Airstream or a 25’+ caravan to tow, this would be the perfect vehicle for the job. The only thing I’d want would be a 6.5 litre Detroit Diesel Turbo diesel engine.

I like it alot but prefer stock vinyl interior to this custom stuff but buckets are nice. Great vehicles and tough as nails. The tbi systems while not the last word in performance are durable and reliable. Sweet ride!

We had a lot of these on the lot when I was there (1987 – 1988).

    They didn’t like me.

My 1977 has a solid space in my line up….couldn’t have moved as much as I have without her – the last shop relocation and now a storage I had fer near 40 yrs….loaded down all the time.

Nice truck. I had a number of Suburbans, from a 1982 that I got from VA in 1988 to a 1998 that I got in 1999. I got the first one because I got tired of my Old English Sheepdog sitting beside me in the single cab pickup. That’s not good in the winter with snow on the dog. I finally got rid of the Suburban because the last Sheepdog (at age 15) had an easier time getting into the back of a Toyota Corolla than the 3/4 ton 4 x 4 Suburban. I really miss those things. Sheepdogs and Suburbans . . . . . .

The interior and exterior dress-up pretty much shouts 1990. She’s a beauty.
